Poem Of The Month: September 2011
For September's Poem of the Month, I have chosen the poem Irish Hunger by Helen Soraghan Dwyer. It is taken from her new collection Beyond.
IRISH HUNGER
There’s a great hunger
Bred in our bones
Hunger for freedom
For eight hundred years
Hunger for food
In the Famine
Hunger for peace
In the Troubles
Hunger for money
When we were poor
Hunger for comfort
In Celtic Tiger times
Hunger for justice
When some priests let us down
Hunger for accountability
When bankers sold our sovereignty
And hunger for leaders
To bring it all home.
