Poem Of The Month: May 2014
For May's Poem of the Month, I have chosen the poem 'An Emperor Called Chi' by Joseph Fagan.
It is taken from his collection Muse.
AN EMPEROR CALLED CHI
To surround yourself in death with
Armies of clay-baked soldiers, and
Have all of your concubines who did
Not produce a son for you, entombed
Within your sarcophagus –
Is one thing.
But, to take to the mountain in old age;
Believe that you can make yourself
Eternal here on earth, if children, pure
Of heart, are sent forth to find for you,
The place where Heaven and Earth are
Joined together –
Is quite another thing altogether.
