For July's Poem of the Month, I have chosen the poem 'Ellipsis' by Harry Owen.
It is taken from his collection Small Stones for Bromley.
ELLIPSIS
The night sky, the stars, they gather like friends,
though you know hardly any of their names;
like relatives, admirers, those you feel
you can rely on. Like Dora. Sirius. Dog star.
They matter because you give permission
for them to matter, these trees, this ocean,
these heavens that don’t need your permission.
They matter, full stop. They matter. Full stop.
And you, question mark … you matter only
insofar as you are sure that you don’t.
