For December's Poem of the Month, I have chosen the poem 'At The Oil Depot' by Sam Burnside
It is taken from his collection Forms of Freedom.

Car In The Shade by George Hodan

AT THE OIL DEPOT

It is quite a new vehicle –
Station wagon, four-wheel drive, jeep-kind-of-thing –
A crossover car, that is it:
Loads of room for the family,
Dog-guard in the back, but no dog today.

He opens the tailgate and the shop-man eases in
A five-gallon drum – blue in colour, plastic –
                                      heavy with home-heating oil
I guess. Meanwhile,
Even though she sits there quietly in the front passenger seat
She appears to be in some other place.
