Poem Of The Month: December 2015

For December's Poem of the Month, I have chosen the poem 'At The Oil Depot' by Sam Burnside.

It is taken from his collection Forms of Freedom.

AT THE OIL DEPOT

It is quite a new vehicle –

Station wagon, four-wheel drive, jeep-kind-of-thing –

A crossover car, that is it:

Loads of room for the family,

Dog-guard in the back, but no dog today.

He opens the tailgate and the shop-man eases in

A five-gallon drum – blue in colour, plastic –

heavy with home-heating oil

I guess. Meanwhile,

Even though she sits there quietly in the front passenger seat

She appears to be in some other place.
