Poem Of The Month: October 2011

Back To Main Page

For October's Poem of the Month, I have chosen the poem Used Cycles by Alistair Graham. It is taken from his new collection War and Want.

USED CYCLES

Left alone, chained to the cold iron

The masters are gone in pursuit of their individual aims

To purchase a coat for the winter, to browse the best-sellers

or indulge the tray-bakes at the corner café

The bicycles have performed their only role by carrying

their masters efficiently to their intent

They wait patiently until again they suffer upon their frames

the pressure which signals another journey and lonely wait
