Poem Of The Month: May 2015

Back To Main Page

For May's Poem of the Month, I have chosen the poem 'The Concise Atlas of the Earth' by Jane Morley.

It is taken from her collection Fathomable.

THE CONCISE ATLAS OF THE EARTH

New Edition 1973

Face to face back to back

bound to one another,

all totally in the dark.

Whoever lets in the light

will start rumours of

dismembered maps,

next door moving in,

brochures and boats shifting

millions from green

to parched for pleasure,

vice versa for survival.

The whisper will go round

of war zones, no-go,

who’ll get which Olympics,

pandemics. Perhaps

they are best left as they are

between Pears and Britannica,

leaning into the future.
