MA welcome 2024
MA module choice for archaeology programmes
History MA module choice will take place from Friday 23 August.
Before submitting your preferences, please consider your choices using the information below and/or by calling into one of our drop-in sessions. You can also get in touch with us at history.maenquiries@sheffield.ac.uk with any questions.
Making your choices
Applicants who have accepted an unconditional offer will receive an email around 23-26 August confirming access to new pre-registration tasks.* One of these tasks is called 'Selection of Approved Modules' and is open from 23 August.
It is very important that you review the programme and module information for your degree before making your selections.
Some archaeology modules may have limited space available, we will give priority to students registered on an archaeology programme but we recommend that you have back-up choices in mind for each semester in case a module becomes oversubscribed.
If you choose a guided module, approval can only be provided by the owning programme who may run a slightly different module choice process (please enquire).
Module information
Core modules are compulsory and in most cases automatically loaded to your student record.
You will be able to choose archaeology modules provided by the School of Biosciences as well as those offered by the School of History, Philosophy and Digital Humanities, these are indicated by a 'BIS' prefix.
In order to manage your workload you should, where possible, aim to take a balance of 90 credits in each semester.
Additional information for MA Archaeology & Heritage students
Two of the programme-wide core modules (Reinventing Archaeology and Research Design: Planning, Execution and Presentation) will already be loaded to your record. You will need to choose if you'd like to take the dissertation or work placement module. You will also need to choose from one of three pathways: archaeology, heritage and landscape and will need to select the relevant core modules for your chosen pathway as part of the module select process. You should then use your remaining credits to choose option modules.
Please note that if you have chosen the core Work Placement module, you cannot choose HST413 Heritage, Museum and Field: Archaeology in Practice module as an option.
Please note that some core and option modules are run in the School of Biosciences and these are indicated by a 'BIS' prefix.
Additional information for Cultural Heritage Management students
This programme is offered in collaboration with the Management School. Please note that the core and optional modules indicated by the prefix 'MGT' are provided by the Management School.
Additional Language module application information (click to expand)
The Languages for All programme gives students access to studying a wide range of languages.
Language modules offered by the Modern Languages Teaching Centre (Arabic, French, German, Italian, Latin, Polish, Portuguese, Spanish, Catalan, Czech, Dutch and Russian) and the School of East Asian Studies (Chinese, Japanese and Korean) are usually taught in combined classes with undergraduate students and members of the public and are 10 credits. MA students will take an additional 5 credit Enhanced Languages module to make the credits up to 15.
For students of archaeology, Latin may be particularly invaluable, as it provides direct access to a wealth of primary sources and historical documents, offering you the tools to engage with the texts in their original language. To find out about learning Latin with us, you can watch this video.
In addition to submitting your history module choice form, you will need to complete the MLTC or SEAS application form so that they can consider your existing language skills and which level of language learning would be appropriate. These forms will open on 9 September 2024. In the meantime you can complete the MTLC or SEAS register an interest form and you will be contacted when applications open.
If successful, places on Language modules are allocated on a first-come, first-serve basis, so we would recommend completing the application form quickly once it opens.
Confirmation of your modules
Your approved module choice requests will be added to your student record. Once you have 180 credits of modules on your record you can proceed to registration - see the welcome programme for more information.
If any of your choices are rejected, e.g. the module is oversubscribed or your selection is not in line with the programme regulations, then you will receive an email notifying you of the rejection and you'll be able to submit an alternative choice.
Please be aware that it may take a few days to approve your modules. We will be dealing with a large number of requests at this time, but we will try to approve your requests as quickly as possible.
When will my timetable be available?
Your timetable will become available after your modules have been approved and you have registered. If you have chosen a module with multiple seminar groups, this may take an extra day or two for the seminar groups to show. See here for more information about accessing your timetable.
How can I change my pathway or option modules?
If you would like to make changes to modules after they have been loaded to your record, you should follow the add drop process.
