A User Group is a selected market of people that you would be aiming to design your lamp for. It is good practice to identify the User Group you are designing for, before you begin your project as this will help you to generate suitable design ideas that meet the needs of your selected 'client'.
Choose one of the ‘Suggested User Groups’ below that you would like to design for, or you can think of your own if there is not a suitable one. You must remember your User Group when you start to generate your design ideas e.g. they should be appropriate for the user!
Teenager
Boarder
Young Child (4-12 years)
Baby (0-3 years)
Grandparents
Business person
Parents
Adult
Good designers will start to ‘analyse’ (examine) the problem in more detail, and in particular who (the 'User Group') they are designing for. Often this is done through the use of a ‘Web’ diagram, which allows the designer to investigate the problem and often list questions to be solved in order to design a good product.
Ideally you should list lots of questions on your Web diagram of information that you do not yet know, alongside what things you do know. No one expects you to know how to design a lamp at this stage and this web diagram should help you to organise your thoughts and guide you with the project.
The type of information usually includes the design restrictions, areas of research (what you need to find out), influences (things that will help you design for your user group), Themes (topics that are linked to your selected user group) and Technology (how will it work). You should add your own questions to the web analysis web i.e. what you don’t know that you need to find out in order to design your own lamp for your selected user.
Create your own mind map to bring together all of you thoughts and ideas about the lamp project.
You can do this digitally and include images or by hand using pens and paper. If you draw it by hand you can also add appropriate sketches and decoration. You might find if faster and more natural to do it by hand.
The idea is to present all of you thoughts about the project on paper.
When you have finished you should hand in your web analysis to the Google classroom assignment and you should also put an image of it on your website page for the lamp project - don't forget to press publish to show your changes on your website.
Use different layers for text, highlights and shadows.
Use different layers for different sections or parts.
Choose a colour theme or style
Drawing words or fonts in 3D or block letters allows you to drop colour in after and looks better than just drawn letters.
Find ways to link and group ideas. Longer text could be written in a text box and inserted onto the design page.
Use images from Google to trace over and create your own digital renderings.
Ensure you always have a clear title to explain what the work is about.
You can never add too many layers!
Limiting the amount of image traces you do can speed things up. using text boxes with an appropriate style can also help you work faster
Using layers is very important to create shadows or highlights in front or behind objects
Text may appear neater and be more legible than hand written words or sentences
