Rugby School Thailand have approached you to to design and develop a Clock prototype to promote student work at the school and to possibly be sold in the school shop. Initially this clock will be a ‘one-off’ design for you; a family member; a relative; a friend or perhaps a business.
Your ‘Client’ requires a number of design proposals (ideas) based around a theme of your choice, and also the manufacture of a final working design, although somewhere on the design the Rugby School Thailand logo should be engraved. You are required to Design and Make a clock prototype to be used in a specific room of your choice (this does not have to be your house or room! It could be a friend, grandparents, relatives, a business, a place of work etc.).
Your clock prototype will be assessed and if suitable may be manufactured in quantity to be sold initially in the school shop.
To improve your design understanding it is important that you conduct research that should improve your design idea generation.
Good designers will start to ‘analyse’ (examine) the problem in more detail, and in particular find out more information about who (the ‘Client’) they are designing for. Often this is done through the use of a web diagram, which allows the designer to ‘Brainstorm’ or ‘Mind Map’ the problem.
A web diagram of this type should ideally list lots of questions of information that you do not yet know and need, alongside what knowledge you do know, to find out about in order to solve the problem.
The type of information usually includes areas of research (what you need to find out), influences (things that will help you design), and considerations (special design features) that the ‘client’ has requested.
A Web diagram has been started for you on the right hand side with possible ‘themes’ that you may wish to consider.
You need to add more information to the themes given, and also add 2 themes of your own (these can be anything i.e. Nursery Rhymes, Children’s books, Sports, Space, Nature, Celebrations, House, Sea life, Thai culture etc.), to help give you possible starting points for generating your Design Ideas for a clock. Remember, these are just starting points to get you thinking of possible ideas for your clock!
