Leading Activities In STEM
In today’s session we will focus on safety; considering:
Why it is important for a STEM leader to plan and lead a safe activity
How you can ensure your sessions are as safe as possible.
Understanding the need to be safe
Why do you think it will be important to plan and lead safe STEM activities for:
You as the leader.
The people you are leading.
The organization.
Identify at least three reasons why a STEM leader should plan and deliver safe
sessions and share these with others.
How to plan and lead safely
Identify steps you can take to ensure your sessions are as safe as possible, this might include:
Things you might do when planning your activity or session.
What you might say to participants.
How you might make the working area safe.
Ways in which you could deal with any unsafe behavior.
How you could end a session safely.
Share your thoughts with others in the group.
Safety checklist
Thinking about the steps you identified previously, you can now create a ‘safety
checklist’.
This document will identify some key safety rules that should be followed, by
you, the participants and anyone else involved in your activity or session, to
optimize safety
Your ‘safety checklist’ will be displayed on the wall during your session, so make
it as interesting to look at as you can!
