Development is the process of trying to improve your initial idea to make sure you have considered all design options and details before you commence manufacture. Development ensures a thorough design process has been followed and gives a client options within the same design style. It can be a difficult to develop design ideas so you are going to learn some techniques to help you learn how to develop ideas.
To help you learn how to develop your ideas you will use the 5 x 5 development strategy. This is an activity where you will develop each others work. It allows you to see the work of others and share ideas. As a result of the strict timing you will learn how to work faster when sketching your work.
Your teacher will explain and work through this with you. You could use the other pupils’ ideas that you gain from this activity to help you with your individual development.
You should present a photo of the outcome from the 4X4 on your digital portfolio. Don't forget to annotate the photograph. To evaluate your opinions of the outcome.
Things to develop during the 4x4
Change one part of the overall shape of the design
Add some cut out shapes to the top layer that reveal the middle layer
Change the shape and position of the key ring hole
Change the design so that all 3 layers are visible from the top
Individual development is development of your ideas that you do on your own. You can use ideas from the 4x4 development to help you or you can experiment yourself. You should use arrows to show the flow of your development. Annotation is really important to communicate your design decisions.
