To use symmetrical 2D crating, a lightly sketched centre line can help as a guide. For the main parts of a shape, mark out the main features so that you can position everything correctly.
Remember to keep all the lines light until you are sure that you have drawn the correct shape and then go over the outlines to make the shape stand out.
Your teacher will demonstrate the technique shown below.
Before you start sketching, it can be beneficial to warm-up your hand, wrist and coordination by sketching straight lines that are parallel on the page. Hold the pencil near the middle so that your lines are light and practise moving your pencil in a fast continuous motion. You should not feather the lines!

To make certain sketches on a page stand out you can use a colour surround or a colour block. This will grab the attention of anyone looking at your sketch work and make them look at that particular design. We use these tehniques to make the main or most important sketches stand out.
When doing a colour surround you render around the outside of the shape in dark tone and then create a fade as the colour moves away from the shape. This technique gives the impression of the shape glowing on the page.
A colour block is a block of colour placed behind the sketch. Usually the block of colour is a square or rectangle. The colour block should have the same tone of colour throughout the shape. This technique has the effect of lifting the sketch off the page visually.

Copy the shapes on the left using the techniques demonstrated by your teacher. Work on one piece of A4 paper. You should demonstrate the use of crating as well as demonstrate a colour surround and a colour block on your 2 best shapes.
Hand your work in on the Google Classroom assignment. Make sure you take a good quality picture of your work.
