Use the working drawing templates on slide 5 to trace around and create a test model of one of your developed designs. Sketch your chosen design for each layer onto the paper templates, colour render the layer to match your design and then cut these out. Glue the paper templates onto card (you could use an old cereal box) to test your developed design. Take a photograph of your test model and present it in the space below. Insert photograph’s of your card test model on this slide.
Make a card model of your chosen development of your torch.
Follow the steps below and photograph as you go along so that you can show what you did on your digital portfolio.
You will need a cutting mat, pencil and craft knife
Start by drawing the shape of the top layer
Colour the outside of the shape and any details with a dark colour tone
Render a lighter tone in the middle of the shape.
Make sure the dark and light tones are blended.
To give the appearance of plastic you can apply dark tones of colour in parallel diagonal straight lines (use a ruler for this technique). These darker lines give the appearance of light reflecting off the plastic.
Finished rendered profile of top layer with the advanced technique applied.
Use the craft knife to cut around the shape. Make sure you have a cutting mat underneath and wear safety goggles.
Do not push too hard. Let the sharp blade do the work and just follow the shape with the knife.
Cut out the switch details and screw hole details carefully.
Now you have the top layer shape, you can use it to trace around to help you make the middle layer shape correctly.
See the middle layer drawn by using the top layer as a template.
Colour the middle layer in block colour.
Cut out the shape using the craft knife.
Cut the screw holes and the battery hole and the channel for the LED. Now you should have 2 layers.
Use the top and middle layers to help you draw the shape of the bottom layer.
Here is the profile of the bottom layer.
Colour the bottom layer in block colour.
Making the card model helps you to know know the 2D Profiles of your torch layers.
When you have cut out all of the layers, you should end up with the 3 profiles that look like this:
Make sure you take photos of these layers before you glue them together. Put these photos on your sites with the title 2D profiles.
Render the back of the bottom layer so that the whole of the outside of your model looks realistic then use a glue stick to stick the layers of your model together.
