i-Ready assigns placement levels for Overall reading and each of the reading subtests according to a multi-tiered set of placement level rules. According to the i-Ready logic, a student is first assigned a Grade Level Placement according to their Scale Score. A student is then given a Relative Placement which depends both on the Grade Level Placement and one of three Placement Definitions that can be selected. The rules for Grade Level Placement and Relative Level Placement are described in more detail in the sections below.
Grade Level Placement
i-Ready assigns Grade Level Placement using a two-tiered set of scale score benchmarks. A student is first assigned a grade level according to a table such as the one below for Overall reading.
If the grade level assigned according to the table above matches the student's chronological grade- the grade in school in which the student is currently enrolled- then they are also assigned an Early, Mid, or Late placement according to a table such as the one below for Overall reading. The student's Grade Level Placement is then the combination of the Early, Mid, or Late designation and their grade level. If the grade level assigned according to the above table doesn't match the student's chronological grade than they are not given an Early, Mid, or Late placement and the assigned grade according to the above table constitutes their Grade Level Placement.
The following is an excerpt from the i-Ready manual describing the Grade Level Placement rules covered on the previous page.
Relative Placement
In addition to assigning a student a Grade Level Placement, i-Ready assigns students with a Relative placement according to one of three Placement Definitions that can be selected. The excerpt below is i-Ready's description of these Placement Definitions in the i-Ready manual.
Standard View
After communication with i-Ready, the Data Collaborative has advised all of its school aged partners to use the Standard View Placement Definition for all reporting on i-Ready Placement Levels. This decision was made per i-Ready's suggestion that this is the ideal Placement Definition for measuring growth throughout a year. In accordance with the Data Collaborative's recommendation this report uses the Standard View Placement Definition.
Below are the Grade Level Placement tables defined by i-Ready for each of the reading subtests.
