Reading and understanding text.
Reading and understanding text.
Typically, reading comprehension develops as children become stronger independent readers in second and third grade. Similar to vocabulary, comprehension skills are developed as children enter school starting with listening comprehension skills and eventually developing reading comprehension skills as children begin to read text.
A child reads and understands passages. This is demonstrated through responding to questions about what was read.
Reading comprehension is a skill to understand. The ultimate goal of reading is to understand what was read. Comprehending text helps children accurately respond to questions, make predictions, summarize, and generalize what was read.
