Understanding spoken words (listening) and written words (reading comprehension).
Children begin developing language comprehension during the early childhood years (birth to age 5). Language comprehension continues to develop throughout the school-age years and into adulthood (through vocabulary and reading comprehension).
Children understand the words they hear. They can complete simple directions and follow along with a story being read aloud.
Language comprehension is a foundational reading skill. Language Comprehension is essential to making sense of what is heard (listening comprehension) and read (reading comprehension). Language comprehension includes multiple concepts such as vocabulary and background knowledge used in both listening and reading. Specifically, listening comprehension contributes to children understanding what they hear (stories, directions, questions).
