Explain the bright spots and challenge areas one at a time by generating insight to the root cause.
In Explain we will answer “why?” by generating insights into the root causes behind these bright spots and challenge areas. During Explain we should use all of the information we have available. This includes data as well as experience, intuition, expertise, common sense, etc.
Explain works by Naming ONE bright spot or challenge area at a time to go deep into by looking at each of the relevant data sources.
After Paraphrase we have answered our “what is happening?” questions and have identified our bright spots and challenge areas. Now in Explain we will answer “why?”. Next we will use our answers to “what is happening?” and “why?” to Decide.
Getting to the root cause (the source of value behind our bright spots, or source of the problem in our challenge areas) is critical because without this our efforts to replicate and scale our brights spots and solve our challenge areas will likely prove ineffective.
It is imperative that we Name ONE bright spot or challenge area at a time. If we were to focus on more than one, we would not be able to reach a second tier/depth of understanding, because we would be trying to analyze different focus areas at the same time.
Within the Data Collaborative, after filling out our progress to goal we will document root causes in the table underneath each section of SMART goals. In Explain we should leverage our different levels of data, as well as our knowledge around the Reading Success Pathway (RSP 1.0), Evidence Based Practices (EBP 2.0), and Implementation (IMP 3.0) pillars, and the role that we know that these play in helping us to achieve improved literacy outcomes.
Data Collaborative Tools for Explain:
Why?, why?, why?, why?, why?
*Hint: If you are struggling to answer why, but don’t think you have arrived at the root cause, a good place to start is asking:
