Understanding narrative text that they read to themselves by retelling a story.

Preparation

Prepare a text that students will read to themselves.

Procedure

Tell the student(s): Today we are going to read a story and talk about it. Read the story to yourself, then we’ll talk about it.
Have the students read the story to themselves.
Ask the student to retell the story.
As the child retells the story, mark his or her accuracy related to the retelling components in the table (below).
You may prompt students with questions about aspects they did not address in their retelling.
Listen for the aspects of retell, as well as for inferences that the child makes.

Outcome

Students will demonstrate understanding of a narrative story.

How do you know if the students are ready for a Mastery Task?

We recommend administering a Mastery Task after an intervention, or targeted teaching of that skill, has been in place for 3 weeks. If a student appears to have mastered the skill before then, we recommend administering the Mastery Task.

What do I do with the results of the Mastery Task?

Using the results to guide your next lessons is a proactive approach to target weak skills or advance to the next skill level for students.
