This quick and simple phonics assessment can help you, as the teacher, to quickly find the phonics skills your K-3rd grader needs to work on.
Prepare a list of words that you will use during the assessment.
One-on-one
This quick phonics assessment:
*It works well to slip the 3 student assessment pages into plastic sleeve protectors or laminate them for multiple uses.
The 3 student assessment pages start off with a word family assessment, where the student has to create different real and silly words. Then it moves to more difficult phonics patterns, such as CVCe, CVVC, and even open and closed syllable patterns.
As kids read the words, the teacher uses the 1 page teacher recording sheet to record the students’ correct and incorrect answers as well as date it when they have mastered it.
It’s counted as “mastered” or complete when they can read 4/5 of that phonics skill. If learners miss 2 or more of a particular phonics skill, they haven’t mastered it just yet.
How do you know if the students are ready for a Mastery Task?
We recommend administering a Mastery Task after an intervention, or targeted teaching of that skill, has been in place for 3 weeks. If a student appears to have mastered the skill before then, we recommend administering the Mastery Task.
