Explicit instruction is a systematic, direct, engaging, and success oriented approach to teaching that supports achievement for all students. The Data Collaborative uses Explicit instruction as the approach in targeting and developing skills along the Reading Success Pathway. The observation forms, resources and practices used in the Data Collaborative were created through the lens of explicit instruction. In addition to explicit instruction, the Data Collaborative incorporates other research-based techniques including active read alouds and strategies to promote language and communication in infants and toddlers (e.g., commenting and labeling, imitating and expanding) to develop skills along the Reading Success Pathway.
