Grade 6 Social Studies: Democracy in Action!
In Grade 6 Social Studies, students embark on an exciting journey to discover the roots of power, freedom, and fairness. We’ll travel across time and around the globe to see how big ideas from the past shaped the way we live today.
We’ll break our adventure into three main parts:
Ancient Roots & Big Ideas: We’ll explore the origins of democracy in Ancient Athens and the Roman Republic. Students will compare direct and representative governments and see how these ancient systems laid the groundwork for modern society.
The Path to Canada: We’ll discover how the Magna Carta, the Haudenosaunee Confederacy, and the British parliamentary system influenced how we make decisions in Canada today. Students will learn how our provincial and federal governments work and why having an independent judicial system is so important.
Rights, Freedoms, and Your Voice: We’ll dive into the Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms to see how our laws protect everyone and celebrate our diverse heritage. Finally, students will learn how to be active citizens by planning their own projects to help their communities thrive.
By the end of the year, students won't just be learning about history—they’ll be gaining the critical-thinking skills needed to participate, lead, and make a difference in their world!
