Video Note is a lightweight video recording service that allows learners and instructors to record short videos with a webcam. These videos can be added where video attachments are supported and when the HTML Editor’s Insert Stuff option is available.
Since Video Note is available throughout the Brightspace platform, there are many use cases. You can record lectures, feedback for gradebook items, video discussion threads, or have your student submit a video note as their assignment.
Please note, Video Notes have a time limit of 30 minutes. Need a longer video? See the video tutorial section below!
You must have a computer with a working webcam and microphone to use Video Note
Select an area in Brightspace that utilizes the HTML editor. This is in almost every tool, such as Grades, Discussions, Assignments, Content, and Announcements (there are more too!).
Click on the “Insert Stuff” button in the top left.
Click on the Video Note option. You may have to allow Brightspace to use your camera and microphone if your camera and microphone do not automatically show up. The options will be different depending on what browser you are on.
When ready, click the “New Recording” button and begin your Video Note. If you do not see the blue ‘New Recording’ button, please see the ‘Troubleshooting’ section below.
When you are finished recording your video, click “Stop Recording”. Then click “Next”.
Give your video a title and description. Select a language and click ‘Automatically generate captions from audio. Then click “Next”.
Click “Insert” to embed the video into your discussion post or click “Refresh Preview” to preview your video before embedding it.
Limitations
The recordings created with Video Note are limited to 15 minutes.
You cannot download or embed the files created by Video Note, they can only be played in Brightspace where you created them.
Troubleshooting
If you do not see the blue button to record, please try the following:
Ensure you are using a computer and not a mobile device
If you are using Google Chrome, when you go to the Video Note screen, look up in the address bar and there should be a small camera icon listed. Click on that and choose the options to enable/allow the camera and microphone to be used on the site. Once enabled, refresh the page and try again.
Try an alternate web browser to see if that resolves the issue. Chrome, Firefox, Edge, and Safari are all compatible with Brightspace.

Video Note is a great tool for quick talking heads to your students. You can use this tool to deliver updates, feedback, and more. Note that Video Note does not have the ability to record your computer's screen or audio.
Certainly, you can record an audio clip by selecting the Audio Only slider. Similar to the video version, you can record up to 30 min of your audio.
Unfortunately, Video Note requires a constant internet connection as it uploads the video as it records. If the video has not finished uploading by the time you lose connection, your video may become corrupt or fail to upload. In some cases, the video may resume its upload when you regain connection. You can always check your Media Library to see if the video finished uploading. Simply click on the Gear Icon (Admin Cog) in the top right of Brightspace and select Media Library. Your most recent video or audio should be at the top of the list.
