The Brightspace Awards tool enables instructors to create and issue badges and certificates to recognize student achievements, promote engagement, and even introduce some gamification elements. These awards can be issued automatically using Release Conditions, or you can issue them manually when you feel a student has earned the award. The Awards Tool breaks down awards into Badges and Certificates, and each has its own specific use cases.
Note that Badges are not academic records and they are not replacements for grading.
Badges are digital awards that represent student accomplishments in a course. These badges are usually represented by an icon depicting what the badge is for. Brightspace uses the Open Badges format for digital badges, which encodes each badge with vital information to prove the badge's validity. This includes the Issuer, Criteria, Issue date, etc.
You can build badge icons within Brightspace, or you can use an external tool and import the badge icon.
Certificates are awards that certify a student's mastery of a course or subject. Brightspace allows you to create your own PDF certificate, then it automatically password-protects the PDF when it is downloaded to keep users from editing it. Each certificate automatically generates a random password that is not displayed to any user, so there is no need to generate your own passwords.
The Awards Widget allows your learners to see all of the available awards that they can earn in your course as well as the awards they have already earned. They can also select these awards to be taken directly to the Awards Tool.
The Awards Leaderboard Widget allows you and your learners to see who has earned the most Badges or Credits in the course. This can be a fun way to add some gamification to your course and have students compete to earn the most Badges/Credits.
In your course's Awards Tool, select the Course Awards tab
Deselect the two checkboxes "Allow users in this course to make earned awards public" and "Allow users in this course to make earned awards public"
From there, the settings will automatically save and learners cannot share their awards externally to other sites.
Brightspace allows users to share their awards on their Profile, LinkedIn, or with a public link. Users will need to do the following to share their awards:
Click on the profile icon in the top right
Select Profile
Click View My Awards
Select the Share button under the award they wish to share and choose one of the following options
Share to Profile: This will add the award to their Brightspace profile. Other users can click on another user's profile to view their basic information and see awards that have been added.
Share to LinkedIn: This will prompt the user to log in to their LinkedIn account. From there, the award will be transferred to their LinkedIn account for their connections and possible recruiters to see.
Create Link: This will create a public webpage that anyone with the link can view. It will house the award's basic information including Issuer, Issue Date, Criteria, etc.
Yes, learners will receive a notification and it will appear in their Subscription Alerts (messaging icon) feed. They will also receive a pop-up message that will appear the next time they log into Brightspace that includes basic information and a link to the award.
