As part of an ongoing effort to improve the college’s technology services and fiscal responsibility, we will be moving away from Panopto and recommending the use of various other video tools available. Please review the instructions and processes below carefully to ensure your important videos are saved and you are aware of recommended alternative video workflows.
With the transition away from Panopto, users are encouraged to download all necessary videos and either locally store the files or use a cloud or video storage service for any videos they wish to save. As mentioned in our communications, access to the Panopto platform will end on June 30, 2025, and any video left on the platform after July 27, 2025 will be permanently deleted by Panopto.
Local storage options include:
On your device's memory in your files
On an external memory device such as an external hard drive, SSD, etc.
Note: Changing the quality of a video's Podcast in Panopto may result in larger file sizes. You will need to ensure your local storage device has enough available memory to store your video files.
For cloud or video storage, the DIID team recommends the use of the Brightspace Media Library or YouTube, however, users may use any service that works best for them. Support and instructions for using YouTube and the Media Library can be found below. Please note that you will be solely responsible for your video files, platform knowledge, and support if you choose to use a cloud or video storage service outside of Brightspace.
Attention! NICC is not responsible for video storage, corruption, management, or loss.
Navigate to the video you wish to download in Panopto
Note: If you do not remember which folder your video is in, click "Everything" from the menu on the left and search for the video in the Search Bar
Hover over the video and select the Settings button (Gear icon)
You may also click on the video and select the Download button (down arrow icon) in the top right of the window
Click on Outputs from the menu on the left
Note: You can change the resolution and/or layout of the video before downloading it by using the "Type" and "Quality" dropdowns below the video podcast and clicking "Apply". If you do change these options, the video podcast will need to process before you can download it.
Select "Download Podcast" to download an MP4 file of the video to your device
By default, Panopto sets all video outputs to "Side-by-Side" and 720p (30 fps). You can change these default options by using the "Type" and "Quality" options in the Outputs menu:
Type: Sets the layout for the downloaded video
Picture-in-Picture: The primary video will be a small window in the bottom right corner of the secondary video. Recommended for Zoom meetings and recordings where you have a speaker/presenter and shared screen.
Primary Video Only: Only keeps the primary video source which is typically the speaker/presenter. Recommended for videos with only 1 video stream (presenter or screen share).
Secondary Video Only: Only keeps the secondary video source which is typically the screen share. If the video is a Zoom Meeting, it will download the shared screen and a grid view of participants when a screen isn’t shared. Recommended for videos with more than 1 video stream and only the shared screen or participant tiles are needed.
Side-by-Side: The primary video will be next to the secondary video. Recommended as an alternative to Picture-in-Picture if having the primary video covers important information on the secondary video.
Tile All Streams: All video streams will be tiled next to each other. Not recommended.
Quality: Sets the resolution for the downloaded video
576p (30fps): Not recommended as the video quality will be very poor, especially for videos with screen sharing.
720p (30fps): Default option, however, the video quality is not high definition and may not be good for videos with screen sharing.
1080p (30fps): Video is the highest definition from Panopto and is good for videos with screen sharing.
1080p (60fps): Similar to the other 1080p option, however, the video will be smoother at 60 frames per second.
Once you have made your changes, click Apply and then you will need to wait for the Video Podcast to process before downloading.
Panopto's folder structure allows users to save videos in multiple places on the platform. In most cases, videos will go to your "My Folder" as this is the default folder for all users. However, in some cases, your videos may live in a course folder, or in another folder that you created. To find your videos, you will need to do the following:
Select the "Everything" folder from the menu on the left
From there, you will see all of the videos that your account has access to. Use the Search Bar at the top of the page to search for your name or the title of the videos you wish to save. Alternatively, you may also find your videos under your Analytics page:
Scroll down to the "Top Sessions" section and click "See All"
In the top right, click the dropdown menu and select "Any Time"
From there, you should see all of your videos in Panopto. Click on a video's title and then select the title in the "breadcrumb" trail at the top of the Session Analytics page to go to that video in Panopto.
Note: Users have until 6/30/2025 to download any videos they wish to save from Panopto. Any videos left on the platform from 7/1/2025 to 7/27/2025 may be retrieved by the DIID team. Any videos left on the platform after 7/27/2025 may be permanently deleted.

Search for the title of your video, or perform an empty search by clicking into the search bar and tapping "Enter" on your keyboard
Select the video you wish to add and click "Next"
Click "Insert" and the video will be added to the Brightspace Editor you are working in
From there, you can save what you are working on, and anyone with access to the item will be able to watch your video.
In your NICC Gmail account, click on the Google Apps (9 dots in a cube icon) button in the top right of the window
Scroll down the list and select "YouTube"
Click on your profile icon in the top right corner
Select "Create Channel"
You must have a Channel to store and share videos on YouTube

The verification process requires you to enter a phone number to link to your account, and you will receive either a voice message or a text message with a code. Enter this code to verify your account, and then you may continue to upload videos longer than 15 minutes. Click here to learn more about how to verify your account.
Once your video(s) is uploaded, you will be prompted to add information before the video(s) can be published:
Add a title for the video
(Optional) Add a description for the video
(Optional) Select, generate, or upload a thumbnail for the video
Click the radio button next to "Not for kids"
Note: This step is required, however, it only applies to publicly facing videos and videos going to the YouTube Kids platform.
Click "Next" when done
Click "Next" to skip adding Cards or an End Screen
If you have music in your video, you will need to do the Copyright Check. Click "Next" when done
Select your video's privacy based on how you want to share the video
Public: The video will be available to all users on YouTube, and the video may show in search results for YouTube and on search engines such as Google
Unlisted: The video will be available to all users who have the link, but will not be searchable and cannot be found without the link
Private: The video will only be available to the selected users who are signed in with the account/email the video was shared with. YouTube also allows you to share with users with an @nicc.edu email, so anyone signed in with their NICC account could access your video if they have the link.
Click "Save" when done
If you experience any issues with uploading your videos to YouTube or your YouTube account, please reach out to YouTube Support here: https://www.youtube.com/t/contact_us
Note: Some students under the age of 18 may not be able to access YouTube using their NICC account. If you have students under 18 who must view these videos on YouTube, you will need to work with the NICC Helpdesk and the high school's IT.
Note: NICC is not responsible for changes made to the YouTube platform including video retention, flagging, or other policies.
As we transition away from Panopto, please be aware of some upcoming workflow changes. While some adjustments will be minor, others will offer improved functionality. Carefully review these changes to prepare for the transition.
Class Recordings will stay the same as we will continue to use Zoom and the Zoom integration with Brightspace. Just like with Panopto, it is important to make sure you are recording to the cloud and you are not using your Personal Meeting ID. Please refer to the Zoom page for more information on the integration.
For recordings that you use for training purposes or various courses, these will need to be moved by you from Panopto and either into YouTube, your Media Library, or to another video-sharing service of your choice. Please review the options above for moving videos from Panopto.
For future recordings, you will have the following options:
Use Zoom to record to the Zoom Cloud and share your video
With this option, you can open a Zoom Meeting and use the "Record to Cloud" option to record yourself. When done, you can then go to your Zoom Cloud Recordings and copy the Share link. You can also adjust the share settings as needed for your Zoom recordings such as requiring users to log into Zoom first before they can view the video.
Use Zoom or another video recording service to record locally on your computer
With this option, you can use Zoom or another recording software to record a video locally on your computer. You can then upload that recording to the Media Library, YouTube, or another video-sharing service of your choice.
Use the Media Library to record your video in Brightspace
With this option, you can follow the steps above to record a video in the Media Library. After the video is recorded, you can add it to any course in Brightspace by using the "Insert Stuff" button in the Brightsapce Editor. Please refer to the Media Library page for more information.
If you used the Panopto Video Quiz feature, you may be happy to hear that H5P has an even better alternative for you. H5P allows you to copy a public video link from the web, or upload a video from your device. Then you can use its robust question and assessment options to have students complete video activities directly in Brightspace. Visit our H5P page for a demonstration and more information.
NICC Event Recordings will be move from Panopto and will be available for our faculty and staff on YouTube. These videos will be private, so all NICC users who wish to view these videos will need to sign into YouTube with their NICC account. Some NICC events have already been moved to YouTube and you may access them here!

Dear Faculty,
As part of an ongoing effort to streamline the college’s technology services and fiscal responsibility, we will be moving away from Panopto and recommending the use of other video tools available (YouTube, Brightspace Media Library, etc.). Panopto will remain available until July 1, so any of your current video workflows and video storage needs will remain unchanged until then. However, you will want to consider the impact of this change and may take steps now to help with the transition - including backing up any Panopto videos you wish to retain or reuse in your courses after July 1, 2025.
The primary use of Panopto is to store and share recordings of Zoom meetings & Zoom class recordings. This function will be replaced by Zoom Cloud Recording. Beginning in July, our Zoom licensing will allow for unlimited video storage. This means your current workflows in Brightspace to record class meetings and in Zoom to record to the cloud will remain the same. The only difference is where you and your students find the recording afterward, as it will be stored in More Tools -> Zoom under a Cloud Recordings tab, instead of More Tools -> Panopto.
The transition will take place in several stages over the next six months. We will be holding workshops and providing detailed instructions. Please carefully review the timeline below and actions required to ensure that your content is successfully preserved and you understand the various workflows for video usage in Brightspace moving forward.
Transition Timeline
Stage 1 – Transition Period (Now through May 31, 2025):
During this time, please download any Panopto videos you wish to retain. We have step-by-step instructions to guide you in downloading your videos. It is essential you complete this process by July 1, 2025, to avoid losing your video content. However, if you do not plan to reuse any videos in Panopto after July 1, then no action is needed. Take this time to consider which videos are essential to retain, and which ones may need to be updated with brand new video content in a different video platform.
Stage 2 – Loss of Access to Panopto (July 1, 2025):
Starting July 1, 2025, access to Panopto will be disabled. After this date, you will no longer be able to log in or access any video content on the Panopto platform. Panopto administrators will still have access to Panopto and the video library.
Stage 3 – Platform Decommissioning (July 27, 2025):
On July 27, 2025, the Panopto platform will be fully decommissioned, and any remaining data will be permanently removed. Any content not already backed up will not be able to be recovered, so please ensure you have what you need prior to this date.
Action Required
Please take the following steps before July 1, 2025:
Access your Panopto account and review your video content.
Follow the provided instructions to download any videos you wish to keep.
Save your videos to a new platform or storage solution, such as YouTube or the Brightspace Media Library.
Review our alternative methods for video usage or attend one of our upcoming workshops. Workshop dates/times will be posted on the News Hub Event Calendar.
Additional support is available if needed, please do not hesitate to reach out to online@nicc.edu with any questions. Panopto Transition Workshops will be added to the Employee News Hub calendar if you would like to work directly with DIID staff on any item related to this transition.
We understand this transition may present some challenges, and we are committed to providing you with the necessary support throughout this process. We are confident the alternate video solutions available to you and your students will result in minimal disruption and offer new opportunities to engage your students. Thank you for your cooperation and attention to these important changes.
Sincerely,
The Department of Instructional Innovation and Design
