Portfolio
Students can gather evidence of their learning in courses and share to their Portfolio. Once evidence is in Portfolio, you can provide feedback, categorize and review the evidence provided by each student.
The 'Portfolio' tool for instructors is found in the 'More Tools' menu. Note: Students will not see this link, they must access their own Portfolio by clicking on their name (User Settings) at the top of any screen in Brightspace and select 'My Portfolio'. More details are found in the Portfolio guide for students posted on this page.
Using Portfolio
Instructor Portfolio Walkthrough
In your course, select ‘More Tools’ and choose ‘Portfolio’.
The ‘Portfolio’ screen will appear containing a list of all students in your course. First, let’s configure the settings by clicking on ‘Settings’.
Note: Also on this page is a link to ‘Log Into the App’. The Brightspace Portfolio app for Android or iOS can be used for students to collect and submit evidence.
Students can add the following types of files to their Portfolio:
● Video: M4A, MP3, M4V, MOV, MP4
Note: There is no limit to the size of videos; however, they are naturally limited by the device's capacity and bandwidth.
● Images: JPG, JPEG, PNG, GIF
● Documents: PPT, PPS, PPTX , PPSX, DOC, DOCX, RTF, ODT, ODP, XLS, XLSX
● External links to items located in your Google Drive
● External links to items located in Office 365
In the ‘Settings’ area, you have several options. You can optionally choose to use ‘Funster’ avatars instead of Profile pictures if you would like. The other areas are more impactful.
Evidence Approval settings require your approval for evidence. This means you must go in to ‘Approve Evidence’ on the Portfolio page in Step 2 in order for evidence to appear in a Student’s portfolio. The checkboxes show the various ways students can upload evidence to Portfolio. They can use the web-based tool using their device (computer, tablet, phone, etc.). Or they can use the ‘Portfolio App’ for iOS or Android.
Next on the ‘Portfolio Class Settings’ screen is an area called Category Management. This allows you to configure categories (similar to tags) that students can select to help organize their Portfolios. An example would be having all students put pictures of dogs in a ‘Dog’ category and pictures of cats in a ‘Cat’ category. Once you have configured the settings to your liking, go back to the ‘Portfolio’ page by clicking on ‘Portfolio’ in the breadcrumb trail or by selecting More Tools -> Portfolio.
On the ‘Portfolio’ screen, you can ‘Approve Evidence’ if you require evidence to be approved or you can head right into a student’s portfolio by clicking anywhere on any student’s tile. The tile will provide the student’s name, profile picture, a count of evidence collected, and a count of unapproved evidence.
This brings up all Portfolio evidence the student has in their Portfolio. You can add items to their Portfolio by clicking the ‘Add to Portfolio...’ button. Or, you can review the evidence they have uploaded by clicking on the tile showing their evidence.
When browsing evidence, you will see the name of the evidence and will be able to provide feedback to the student. Additionally, you can utilize a rubric or learning outcomes to assess the student’s evidence. There is also an area to provide private comments that only you as the instructor will see. The student may have recorded themselves talking about their evidence. You may also do the same and upload an audio file back to them. The student and you can provide reflections on the evidence and categorize the evidence.
When you are done reviewing the evidence, use the navigation at the top of the screen to go back. You can proceed to review additional student evidence or return back to your class page in Brightspace.

The ‘My Portfolio’ screen will appear, containing a list of all courses you are enrolled in. Click anywhere on a course tile to enter the Portfolio for that particular class.
Note: Also on this page is a link to ‘Log Into the App’. The Brightspace Portfolio app can be used to collect and submit evidence if your instructor allows.
Here you are able to add items to your Portfolio by clicking on the ‘Add to Portfolio...’ button. What can you add? Just about anything!

A window will appear asking to select the source containing the evidence you would like to add. In this example, we will select ‘Upload a file’, which will enable us to upload a paper from our computer. Then, either drag and drop a file onto the screen or ‘browse’ your computer for the file. Your file will upload in a few moments.
You will now see a tile containing the evidence you uploaded. If it does not appear on this screen, your instructor may have a setting enabled to approve evidence. This means they would need to approve the evidence first before it appears in your Portfolio.
Click on the tile of your evidence. There are also options to (2) Comment on or (3) Spotlight your evidence. Spotlighting your evidence is similar to pinning it to the top of your list.
Next, you will see a screen showcasing your evidence along with the title of your evidence. This is similar to the view your instructor will see when they review your evidence. After your instructor reviews your evidence, they may leave some feedback. If you would like, you can record yourself talking about the evidence you uploaded. Or, you can relay your thoughts through text by adding a reflection. The final option is something your instructor may ask you to do, and that is to categorize your evidence. Your instructor may set up some pre-built options for you to use as well.
When you are done reviewing the evidence, use the navigation at the top of the screen to go back.
You can proceed to add more evidence or use the navigation at the top of the screen to return ‘Back to My Portfolio’.
