In the Classlist area of Brightspace, instructors can view the students enrolled in a course, add a course assistant, send email to individual students or the entire class, and verify the last time a student logged into the course. The Classlist will also allow you to see student pronouns as long as the student has added them to their Brightspace profile.
Sometimes faculty need to verify whether a student was enrolled in a course. This can be done by first checking the last date the student was active in the course. If this date is after the start of the term, faculty will then also need to check whether the student received any grades.
Select Classlist in the course navigation bar.
Select Enrollment Statistics at the top of the page.
The Enrollment Statistics page will open, and a list of the students who have withdrawn from the course will appear on its lower half. Find the student in the Withdrawals list. On the far right column, the last date the student accessed the course will be displayed.
Select Done on the top-right side of the page when finished with checking access dates.
Go to Classlist
Select the Add Participants button
Choose Add Existing Users from the dropdown menu
Enter the ID number, username, or full name of the user to add to the course
Select the magnifying glass icon to search for the user
Select the checkbox next to the name of the user
Choose Course Assistant or Course Evaluator from the Select Role dropdown menu
Choose the section from the Select Section menu. If there is more than one section within the course, enrolling a user in one section will allow them access to all sections of the course.
Select Enroll Selected Users
Select the Done button
Instructors can send email messages to one, several, or all Classlist members at one. When sending emails in Brightspace, keep in mind the following:
In your course, select the ‘Classlist’ link in the navigation bar.
Select the ‘Select All’ checkbox to select all of the individuals (up to 50) in your classist.
Tip: This can include you, so you will get a copy of the email as well.
Select the ‘Email’ link, this will open up a new window where you can compose your email.
Note: Everyone will be in the BCC field by default.
Compose your email message and be sure to include a subject. You can optionally add an attachment at the bottom of the email window.
Click the ‘Send’ button. If you included yourself in the message, you will receive a copy in your email. If you do not see it in a few minutes, you may want to check your spam or junk email folder.
Instructors can use the class engagement tool to view grade statistics and monitor student access to the course and discussion boards. This tool provides a view of the whole class as well as options for looking at individual student engagement to help instructors track participation and reach out to students.
Select Classlist from the course navigation bar.
Select the Class Engagement button.
The Class Engagement dashboard will load. The following options can be used to verify student participation:
A box under the "Class Engagement" heading populates the number of students who have not accessed the course in the past week. Select this box to view a list of those students. Select the box again to go back to the main dashboard view.
The "Grade Distribution" box shows a graph of current class grades. Select one of the bars on the graph to view students in that grade range. Select clear to remove the filter.
Go to Classlist.
Select Class Engagement.
Select the name of the student to view their Class Progress page.
Select the pieces of student information to view corresponding pages from their class progress:
Under "Current Grade" select the percentage to view grade progress.
Under "Last Visited" select the number of days to view course access progress.
Under "Discussions" select the number of threads or replies to view discussions progress.
Go to Classlist.
Select Class Engagement.
(Optional) Filter the list of students to those who have not accessed the course in the past week or within a certain grade range using the "Grade Distribution" box.
Select the checkboxes next to the users that should receive the email. To email all students, select the box next to "Name" or the Email Class button.
Select the Email Selected button to draft and send the email.
The accommodation feature works with both the Quizzes and the Assignments tools. It enables instructors to assign learners specific accommodations conveniently through the Classlist tool.
More time to complete quizzes or assignments at the course level
Ability to bypass right-click restrictions (for Quizzes)
Once granted, these accommodations apply to all quiz activities in a course for that learner. You may opt to override the defaulted accommodation for that student for a specific quiz in the Special Access settings.
Open the Classlist in your course and select Edit Accommodations from the dropdown arrow next to the student’s name.
Then assign the appropriate accommodations for the student.
Click 'Save'
The student now has accommodations for all quizzes in the course. An icon will appear next to their name in the class list and class progress so you can easily keep track of which students have accommodations.
Timing:
Multiplier option: This option will multiply the enforced time limit for a quiz by the number you provide. In this example, the student is allowed time and a half to complete the quiz (enter 1.5 for the multiplier). This is the simplest option when assigning extra time.
Extra time option: choose this option to add any number of minutes to the enforced time limit you set, regardless of the size of the enforced time limit.
Controls: When you select this option, you disable the right-click option for everyone in the class, yet override that setting for selected students getting the accommodation. This will use the right-click functionality for intended use with assistive technologies.
NOTE: If “Always Allow Right Click” left unselected, blind and low vision students may be prevented from taking a quiz*.
Set up the quiz settings by selecting Quizzes under More Tools in the navigation bar. Next, Create New Quiz (or edit an existing one).
Give the quiz a name and select the Restrictions tab.
Scroll down to the Special Access section near the bottom of the page and select “Allow Users Special Access.”
Select the student from the Users list (notice the accommodation reference). Then click on the blue “Add Special Access” button.
Notice the student’s name is added with the saved accommodations you had set up in the Classlist. Click the pencil to edit this setting if needed. Click the X to remove the student from the Special Access list for this quiz. Quiz-specific Special Access can overwrite an accommodation for any user on a particular quiz. When you overwrite an accommodation and then click Save, a warning describing the impact of overwriting an accommodation appears.
Important notes: This accommodation functionality only seems to serve a convenience purpose by remembering the originally assigned student-specific accommodation settings from the Classlist. The task still remains of selecting Special Access in the quiz settings and then assigning the student with the accommodation. This task will need to be executed individually for every quiz in your course. Do not assume the system applies the assigned accommodation automatically to your quizzes.
Be careful with “Allow only users with special access to see this quiz” option. Selecting this option hides the quiz from anyone not included in the Special Access list (the rest of the class). There may be a few scenarios where this might be used. For example, this option may be utilized for make-up quizzes. Use this option if you want a quiz to be offered ONLY to select students, purposely preventing availability for the rest of the class.
Please note: The Assignment tool also features Special Access functionality found under the Restrictions tab.
Brightspace uses bihourly uploads from Colleague to add students and instructors to courses. If a student enrolls or withdraws from a course, the next upload will make that change in Brightspace.
Note that if a student enrolls within 45-30 mins of the next upload period, they will not be picked up by that report and will need to wait for the next upload time.
If you merged your course with another, your Classlist will automatically be sorted by the sections that were merged. You can view this by:
In the Classlist, select the drop-down menu next to View By
Click Section
Select Apply
In the Classlist, select the Search Bar under View By
Enter the name, ID, or username of the student
Click on the Magnifying Glass to search
Note that you can also use the Show Search Options to add more filters to your search results. This is helpful if you have a large number of students in your course.
