Brightspace is a learning management system developed by D2L to make teaching and learning online easy, fun, and accessible. If you are new to Brightspace or not comfortable with the system yet, we recommend watching this video and looking at the basic information below to get started. For more information on Brightspace and its various tools, check out our Instructor Tutorials in the menu above.
In Brightspace, select your profile icon/name in the top right corner
Select Profile
On the left, select Change Picture to upload a picture from your computer
Click Add
Click Save or Save and Close when done
Your Brightspace Profile is used to pull information into the Instructor Profile Widget on all of your courses' homepages. It is recommended to fill this out so the widget can display your contact information and so students can get to know you. You can set up your profile by doing the following:
In Brightspace, click on your profile in the top right
Select "Profile" from the list
Enter the following information:
Email: Enter our NICC email
Phone: Enter our Zoom Phone extension, Zoom Phone direct line, or any other number you wish for students to use to contact you
Office Hours: Enter your general Office Hours that you will hold for students
Office Location/Zoom: Enter your college office room number if you are on campus, or enter your Zoom Scheduler link if you are remote or teaching online
Notes: Enter an "About You" so students can get to know you better. You can also enter any other important information that you would like students to know about you.
Click "Save and Close" when done
From there, the Instructor Profile widget will pull this information and display it to students in all of your courses. Please note that the information will be displayed to all courses, so any course-specific information should be added to your course syllabi.
Select your name/profile icon in the top-right of the page
Click on 'Notifications'
Enroll in Notifications to receive updates via email or text message
Click Save when done
If you wish to receive text message notifications, click Register your Mobile and then confirm with the initial text. Once your phone is confirmed you can enroll to receive notifications via text.
Download the Pulse App to get push notifications from your phone! If you do that, you do not need to do the above steps.
In Brightspace, select your profile icon/name in the top right corner
Select Account Settings
Enable the checkbox to 'Allow others to see my pronouns'
Choose 'Use different pronouns' as we currently do not pre-populate this information
Set your preferred pronouns
Select 'Save and Close'
Visit the Android Google Play Store or Apple App Store
Search for 'Brightspace Pulse App' to Download
By linking your NICC Google Account to Brightspace, you can quickly launch into your Gmail, Google Calendar and Google Drive. Additionally, students can easily upload files from their Google Drive to Assignment folders in Brightspace.
Note: This functionality only works for @NICC accounts. It will not work for @gmail accounts.
Visit a Brightspace homepage and locate the 'NICC Google Account' widget.
Select the link in the widget to 'Link to your Google Workspace account'.
A 'Link to Existing Account' screen will appear. Your username should automatically fill in the box. Select the 'Link Account' button.
An authorize button will appear in the NICC Google Account widget. Select 'Authorize'.
A pop-up window may appear and you may have to log in to your NICC account at this time. Proceed to follow the on-screen instructions.
Links to your NICC Gmail, Calendar and Google Drive will now appear.
