Activity Feed
Activity Feed is a course homepage widget that provides a central location for learners and instructors to post messages that are visible to the entire class. For example, an instructor might post reminders about upcoming assignments and links to course materials. Instructors determine if learners can post Activity Feed messages.
Add the Activity Feed Widget to your Course
Add Activity Feed Widget
Log in and access your course. While at the course home page, scroll all the way down to the bottom and click on the... icon. Then, select ‘Manage Homepages’
Select the homepage you want to use by using the ‘Active Homepage’ dropdown menu. Then, click apply to apply that homepage layout to your course.
Note: You can change your homepage layout at any time and you will not lose any data.
Creating an Activity Feed Post
The Activity Feed allows you to post messages to your learners quickly and easily. You can create a post by doing the following:
Click on "+ Create a Post..."
Type your message in the text field
Add any other items using the various tools available (Insert Stuff, Attachments, etc.)
Click Post to post the message instantly
Schedule a Post
After you have crafted your message, you can click Post Later to schedule the post for a later date/time. Scheduled posts will only be visible to users with Instructor access and above and can be edited or canceled before the scheduled post date.
Edit a Post
Similar to the Announcements Tool, you can edit messages even after they have been posted. You will need to do the following to edit a post:
On your course homepage, navigate to the Activity Feed Widget
Find the post you wish to edit
Click the 3 dots in the top right of the post-tile
Select Edit Post
Adjust your post as needed
Click Save Changes when done
From there, the edited post should show any changes that you made. Note that this should not prompt a notification to your learners.
Enable/Disable Commenting
The Activity Feed is a unique tool as it can allow learners to be involved by commenting on posts. With commenting, you can either allow commenting on posts that you choose, or you can disable commenting altogether. By default, commenting is enabled for the Activity Feed, so you will need to select/deselect the checkbox next to "Allow Comments" when creating a post to enable/disable commenting for that post.
To disable commenting for all posts, you will need to do the following:
On your course homepage, find the Activity Feed
Select the down arrow next to the Activity Feed name
Click Manage Commenting and Posting
Deselect the checkbox next to Enable Comments on Posts
Click Save when done
From there, learners will not have the option to comment on any Activity Feed post, and you will not have to worry about enabling/disabling comments when creating new posts
Enable Learners to Post
The Activity Feed also allows you to enable learners to post their own messages. This can be a great way to engage learners, add some social aspects to your course, and more. To enable learners to post on your course's Activity Feed, you will need to do the following:
On your course homepage, find the Activity Feed
Select the down arrow next to the Activity Feed name
Click Manage Commenting and Posting
Select the radio button next to Allow all Learners to Create Posts
Click Save when done
From there, learners will have the ability to post their own messages. You can always switch the settings back later in the semester, and learners will then lose the ability to post.
Note that you should have the ability to remove learner posts, and learners can only edit their own posts.
Pin a Post
If you post important assignments or announcements in your Activity Feed, you can use the Pin feature to make sure that an important post is always at the top of the feed. This is very helpful if you need to make sure learners see a specific post. You will need to do the following to pin a post:
On your course homepage, navigate to the Activity Feed Widget
Find the post you wish to pin
Click the 3 dots in the top right of the post-tile
Select Pin Post to Top
From there, the post should be at the top of the feed with a push-pin icon and an accent line on the left side. You can unpin the post at any time by clicking on the push-pin icon or selecting the 3 dots and clicking on Unpin Post.
Creating and/or Posting an Assignment in the Activity Feed
Along with messaging students, the Activity Feed can also be used to create or choose an existing assignment and post it to your learners. To create an assignment, you will need to do the following:
On your course homepage, select "+ Create a Post..." in the Activity Feed Widget
Select the Assignment tab
Enter a name for the assignment and add your instructions
Select the other options for your assignment (Add to Grades, Due Date, and Submission Type)
Click Post when done
After that, learners will receive a notification about the post and will be able to access the assignment from the Activity Feed. For you, the post should show how many learners have submitted the assignment, and you will have the option to go to learner submissions.
Please note that the assignment can be edited from the Assignments tool if you need to add Availability Dates, Special Access, etc.
Post an Existing Assignment
You can also post existing assignments to the Activity Feed by doing the following:
On your course homepage, select "+ Create a Post..." in the Activity Feed Widget
Select the Assignment tab
Click Select Existing
Choose the assignment you wish to post from the Insert an Assignment window
Click Post to post the assignment
