Japanese Barberry

Berberis thunbergii

Flowers solitary or in small umbel. Stems armed with spines. Leaves entire or toothed. 

Distribution: Invasive species from Asian region.

Uses: Edible berries, bitter taste. Rhizomes can be antiseptic and antibacterial when chewed. They contain Berberine, which has antibacterial effects, and can be used to treat dysentery.
