Tulip tree, yellow poplar

Liriodendron tulipifera L.

Medium-sized to large tree with deciduous simple leaves on a very tall straight trunk.  The leaf has a unique shape that recalls a tulip flower in profile, it is long and wide and has 4 broad triangular lobes. The flowers are long and wide and ranging from green to yellow with orange towards the base. The fruit is long narrow cone-like cluster of overlapping samaras around a central axis.

Distribution: Eastern North America.

Uses:  Wood uses. Lumber cut from tulip poplar trees may be used for a variety of wood-based projects such as flooring, siding, furniture and fencing. The wood is generally light off-white to yellow-brown that darkens with age outdoors. Poplar wood has a straight grain, which helps it take and hold paint and stain.
