Witch-Hazel 

Hamamelis virginiana 

A small tree or shrub with deciduous simple leaves. Flowers are narrow, yellow petals, blooms in late fall. Leaves 2-5" long, oval wavy-toothed. The flowers grow in small clusters. The twigs have a zigzagging shape. Buds and twigs are finely hairy. 

Distribution: Woodland under-stories; shady bottomlands, along waterways and swamps, usually found on the eastern coast of America. 

Uses: Witch hazel is an astringent that is often used as a natural topical remedy. It contains several compounds with potent anti-inflammatory and antiviral properties, which may be useful in treating a variety of conditions ranging from acne and scalp sensitivity to hemorrhoids.
