Seed Lending Library

A Seed Lending Library is designed to share all types of seeds and learn more about the experience of planting and harvesting. The seed library is open to all members of the community and encourages a hands on experience with planting and harvesting using various seeds. The seeds are free!  We simply ask that you record your selections.  You can choose from all kinds of plants, like vegetables, herbs, flowers, and more! We hope you will sow, grow, and harvest seeds and return seeds to the lending library.  The seeds you return or donate do not need to have originated with the seed library, but provide as much information as you can for growing success.  In particular, include the name of the plant, the conditions it prefers, and the year the seeds were harvested.  Small envelopes are available for your seed donations.

We have two locations where we coordinate seed libraries.  Both locations offer excellent children's books about gardening, and host programming related to seed germination, plant growth, and seed harvesting.  Visit the library social media sites to see upcoming programming.

The Portage Public Library in Portage, Pennsylvania hosts a seed lending library at 704 Main St, Portage, PA 15946. The seeds are divided into difficulty of growing and seed harvesting categories, ranging from difficult to easy. Please utilize the list in the menu to view the seeds available.  For the Portage location, contact Dr. Crystal Goldyn (cgoldyn@mtaloy.edu) if you have questions.

The Bedford County Public Library hosts a seed lending library at 240 S. Wood St., Bedford, PA, 15522.  The Master Gardeners of Bedford County assist in the coordination of this seed library.  The seeds are in several forms, including commercial packets, bulk seed separated into smaller packets, or community donated seeds.  For the Bedford location, contact Dr. Merrilee Anderson (manderson@mtaloy.edu) if you have questions.
