Devils Walking Stick 

Aralia spinosa L. 

Shrub or small tree with deciduous bi-pinnately compound leaves which are very large. The bark is covered in small prickles which gives the tree its name. The tree has tiny white flowers with five petals and a wide berry containing three to five hard seeds. 

Distribution: Eastern U.S. 

Uses: The young leaves can be eaten before the prickles harden. They can be chopped and cooked as a potherb. The roots and fruits were used by settlers to treat toothache.
