Eastern Hophornbeam 

Ostrya virginiana 

Small tree with trunk sometimes divided into several stout upright limbs, with narrow rounded crown. The flowers are long hanging catkin and the fruit is long nutlet, flat  ribbed and brown colored.

Distribution: From Nova Scotia to montane forests of Northern Central America. 

Uses: Important winter food for wildlife.  The wood is used for posts, golf club handles, tool handles, etc.  It is strong, heavy and takes a fine polished. Bark can be used for dying and tanning.
