Pendulum Lab
Background: Pendulums have been used for centuries in for various purposes. The most common pendulum for work was in the grandfather clock. The pendulum is used to help the clock keep accurate time. The most common use for entertainment has been with swings. When you were younger, you may have tried to go the same speed back and forth as someone else on the next swing. Even if you were the same weight this is possible, unless the length of the swings was different or you supplied additional energy. This is due to the fact that gravity is constant and the masses are neutralized, because the gravity that is forcing an object to drop on the downward swing is equal to the gravity pushing the object down on the upward swing.
PROCEDURE: Highlighted portions are done.
1. Cut three strings 40 cm, 70 cm and 100 cm long.
2. Tie the strings with loops on each end so the combined length with the weight hanger is 30 cm, 60 cm and 90 cm respectively.
3. Place an Aluminum rod cross piece 10 cm above the table in the clamp connected to the vertical rod.
4. Select the string which results in 90 cm (longest string) with the hanger and loop it over the end of the Aluminum rod cross piece.*The hanger has a mass of 50 g.
5. Raise the weight hanger to an 80 cm drop height from the floor and release.
*Be sure the string is tight(Basically a straight line.) and the rod does not move.
6. Let the “pendulum” swing 10 times, and average the time for one tick and record.
7. Repeat steps 4-6 with drop height of 60 cm and 40 cm.(Change of height chart.)
8. Repeat steps 4-6 with an additional 50 g and an additional 100 g.(Change of mass chart.)
9. Repeat steps 4-6 with a string length of 60 cm and 30 cm.(Change of length chart.)
