Course Description:
This is a college level course offered to juniors and seniors. The class covers prefixes, suffixes and roots used to compose medical terms. The student learns to spell, pronounce, define, analyze and formulate terminology related to body structure, disease, diagnosis and treatment. Medical abbreviations are also included.

Course Materials:

Come to each class with the following materials:
· Loose-leaf Paper / Notebook
· 3 - Ring Binder to be used for Medical Terminology notebook
· Pencils / Pens (No red ink or hard-to-see gel pens)
· Highlighters (optional)
· Lined Notebook Paper
Notebook:
1. Each student will be expected to maintain a notebook for this medical Terminology class. It should consist of a three ring binder that is separate from other class notebooks. These notebooks will be periodically checked for completion.
2. The notebook should be legible and contain the following:
a) Title Page
b) Class syllabus
c) Divisions – Clearly marked with tabs:
· Notes
· Labs – activities
· Class work / handouts
· Tests and Quizzes
· Homework
Assignments:
All assignments should reflect the highest quality work. Work should be complete and neat, or it will not be accepted.
Completing Assignments:
1. All assignments should contain a title, name, class period, and date in the heading. Papers with no name are impossible to enter in my grade book. I will ask during class if the paper belongs to a student, if no one responds, the paper will be thrown away.
2. Homework will be checked at the beginning of the period. LATE ASSIGNMENTS WILL NOT BE ACCEPTED FOR FULL CREDIT! Any assignments not completed at the beginning of the period when we are handing it in will be considered late.
3. Homework assignments will be collected at the end of each unit for point compilation, so it is important to stay organized and not lose assignments.
Make-Up Work:
1. Make-up work will be accepted for excused absences only and it is the STUDENT’S RESPONSIBILITY to obtain any assignments missed.
2. Make-up homework is due the day after a student returns to class following their absence. They must see me at the beginning of the period with the missed assignment to get the appropriate make up date.
3. All tests must be made up by the appropriate day when student returns to class after an absence or a zero will be given…It is the students responsibility to make up work missed during this class period in the appropriate amount of time.
4. Excessive absences on test days can result in a harder test than the original.
Grading Criteria:
Grading is done on a total point system. Total points come from the areas of daily work, quizzes, class participation, worksheets, labs, lab reports and tests.
The grading scale is as follows:
A 100-95 B 94-87 C 86-79 D 78-71 F 70-0
· Grades will be rounded up to the nearest percentage if students have helped other students during the quarter and written about it at the end of the quarter.
· To avoid penalty, all make up work must be finished as outlined in your agenda
· Make up work not completed in allowed time is listed as incomplete.
· Incomplete work will receive a 0%, however all incomplete work must be completed at a level that would otherwise be of passing quality in order to prevent the overall class from being incomplete.
Cheating and Violating Testing Conditions:
Cheating and any violation of established testing conditions is absolutely not tolerated. On the first occasion a zero will be given on the test or assignment and your parents will be notified. On the second occasion the student will be dropped from the class. This includes copying homework.
General Rules:
1. All students are expected to follow the district and school-wide classroom expectancies and policies.
This includes that no electronic devices of any sort in use in the classroom.
2. Be on time to class. District tardy and truancy policies will be enforced.
3. Respect other students and their property. This includes inappropriate comments or language.
4. Bring all materials to class and use class time for class assignments.
