Lino print 2
Portrait Linoprint
Preparations before 1st cut:
(Steps 1, 2 and 3 are from left to right respectively)
Outlined portrait:
After taking a selfie, the picture was invertly printed out with a certain percentage of transparency. The print was then traced out on a rubber sheet using a piece of carbon paper. I traced out using a ball point pen. It was rather difficult to trace hard enough so that the rubber sheet will be inked.
Shaded portrait:
I shaded the darker areas on the printed paper black and drew the background with a 4B pencil. I struggled a little, trying to shade the areas completely dark.
Colour scheme:
I labeled at the bottom of the paper what colour certain areas will be. Then, I coloured the white parts green, some parts of the background red and the rest black.
1st cut of white parts and its print:
(Steps 4 and 5 are from left to right respectively)
White parts cut out:
I traced out my face on the rubber sheet and used a permanent marker to shade in the areas that will remain black. Then, I cut out the white parts.
Print of white parts using green paint:
I printed the face with white parts cut out. I used my cloth to wipe away the painted background. This is my first print. It was quite patchy so I printed out several others. The colour was more solid and the print was less patchy.
I proceeded to cut the green parts. After cutting the green parts - step 6, this are the test prints using green paint - step 7:
1st test print:
Some of the white areas were quite patchy so i cut more to make it less patchy.
2nd test print
3rd test print
Then, I cut the red parts of the background which is the next step - 8 and printed the cut with red paint over the previous green artwork which is the next step - 9.
Next, I did the final cut of all the non - shaded parts on the rubber sheet which is step 10, and I did the test prints of the final cut using red paint (should be using black paint) which is step 11:
1st test print:
I added too little water to the very thick and dry paint so the paint smudged into the gaps.
2nd test print:
I reduced the amount of paint and sprayed water on the roller to make the paint less concentrated and more smooth.
3rd test print
4th test print
Edited final cut - step 12, and its prints using black paint - step 13:
Final cut:
Ms Ng asked me to cut out more areas before my last prints. This was to make my face less dark. This is the edited (final) version.
1st test print:
The background was patchy so I cut more to make it less patchy.
2nd test print:
This was very much less patchy and I was ready for the final prints.

Final Reflection:
In the end, I managed to complete my work nicely with Ms Ng's approval. I was quite confused at the start. I was doing everything really slowly and was lagging behind my other classmates. With determination and peseverance, I still finished my project. Ms Ng also guided me a lot through this journey and I am very grateful for her help. After this project, I learnt many new techniques and also learnt to appreciate this unique and fun form of art.
Dear Audrey, I am thankful you persevered till the end. You had to recut the lino template when everything was done properly but alas in reverse. I could tell you were feeling disheartened from then onwards because you started out drawing the face really well. Still, everything ended well because you did not give up amidst feeling confused and frustrated in the middle. Thank you for giving me the chance to help you comple
