Sketch of potted plant on paper as planning.
Sketching on linoprint.
A drawing half carved where the structure of the image has been carved with details and the background not yet done.
All the features are noiw carved and is ready for printing.
Too much ink was used in some places and too less in others. Some areas were also not carved deep enough leading to weird random spots in the background.
Besides fixing up the mistake, some texture was added to the table to make the drawing look nicer.
Way too much ink used, might have to use lesser ink.
The final product!:)
I choose this pot of plant as I was very new to Linoprint and have not heard or seen Linoprint before. When I went to the internet to find some inspration all i could find was mostly human potraits or potted plants. The potted plants were very complex and was difficult to even to draw .Thus i decide to come up with a more simplified pot of plant but still keeping the curved edges and adding eyes to keep it a challenge rather than a breeze. The hardest part was to carve out the eyes I made a mistake when carving the eyes out but tried to cover it up and it worked. When carving the background i also went a little fast and carved a little over the line but again I tried to fix it and it looks decent. I would say that this work is actually not bad except for the small error I made at the top right where I did not put enough ink. However , overall I feel that this artwork is still very nice and when i do another linoprint in the future I just have to make sure to ink enough but not too much or too less.
2nd project :)
Our 2nd project is to make a lino-portiat of ourselves. We also used 2 colours excluding black and this make this project a little bit tricker. Here is how it turned out!
First I took a picture of myself :)
I had chosen this photo out of the many because in this photo I actually look the happiest with a big smile on my face.
Then I went into Powerpoint to create a more transparent version by using the steps below before printed it out.
Insert the photo
Select the photo
Open picture Format tab
Click on transparency
Click on the centre one
Then, I traced on the picture. I felt that maybe my tracing was a bit off in the first place and this resulted in me could not get the smile and hand right. After numerous attempts, I decided to give up on this piece. I think I had to thicken up the lines for easier cutting and decided which parts should be black in colour.
I then traced on the back so that I was able to the transfer it onto the Lino-print with carbon paper. I used this light box to trace the out the image on the other side so as to ensure that when printed out it would be the same orientation as the picture taken.
I used carbon paper to transfer the image onto the Lino print. It was really cool as I have never used Carbon paper before. Also I had learnt that in order for an effective transferring to happen, the use of a ball point pen to draw/trace is very necessary.
I chose peach and blue. Peach resembles the skin tone and blue for the background because blue is one of my favorite colour
I then first carved out all the white parts so that when I print the peach parts, the white parts would stay white. This time I was extremely careful so I would not cut the print wrongly like my previous project.
So I went to print the peach but it was not how i wanted it to be. I did not like the colour as it was too dark. The only thng I like about this one is that the eyes are extremely clear. But I decided to try again.
I like this one so i will keep this. The eyes are very clear and furthermore the color was nice and the texture was quite even.
This one was also very good since it also had a nice even texture , same nice colour and also the details are very clear
This was also a pretty good print since as mentioned before, the details are much clearer, texture is also very even and the colour is quite perfect.
Next, I carved out the "peach parts" so that I can print the blue colour. I tried to be very careful in this process so as to prevent any mistakes.
I then made a draft since I did not want to mess up the actual prints. For this draft I added too much ink resulting in the Lino prints could not been seen clearly.
So I tried again with lesser ink learning from the previous experience. This piece seems to be clearer, however this time the ink was too dry and hard to transfer. But I was quite pleased with the Lino.
so I started my first print on the failed peach print. However I think I may have misaligned slightly so I decided to redo a new one.
Though this piece are not perfect but I think it is much better than the previous one so I decided to use this as one of the prints.
This one was actually not too bad it was quite allign and quite clear maybe the ears would look clearer with the black
This was also not too bad it was alligned and the details are good too.
For this piece, I think I had used too much ink and did not wipe off the excess. In my own opinion, this piece are not up to my expectations.
Time for carving again. I am trying to leave the black parts behind so that the black outline can be printed out later. As you can see from the print above, there is a hole in the Lino print. I had been very careful but because I was afraid that I did not carve deep enough. Unfortunately I still accidentally carved through the Lino print despite trying to be as careful as possible.
So I printed the draft again so that I could have a rough gauge whether any fixing is needed. As you can see, there are many random dirty spots so I decided carved those out and started all over again
As you can see, this piece here was slightly misaligned. Fortunately we still have a few more test prints. One thing for sure is that this will not be the final print.
So I tried again. This time the alignment was so much better but I do not know why but the background is kind of weird. One area i can improve is I should let it dry properly before I stacked it together with my other works. I guess it is okay that we can always use this as a test print.
This piece here was actually good in my own perspective. Initially this is my chosen final product but I decided to pick the next one instead when I see the next one.
I had chosen this as the final piece as I felt that this piece was one of the better ones. It was one of the better ones with good alignment. The alignment and everything was exactly at where it should be.
This project was pretty fun and interesting. The picture I had chosen supposed to reflect the most smiley face I had but ironically the picture somehow come out to be a face without any smile. I think i need more practice in order to perfect the final product better. There are a lot of areas that i need to improve upon and needs to be more careful in the process. There are a lot of times I wish to give up as this is the first time I am doing a human face and the process of this art piece is not easy and is complicated. However I decided to keep it going and eventually I had managed to product a final product. Though this may be my first try on this art piece and it may not be the best art piece but I feel that this art piece are able to reflect the efforts I had put in as well as the resilence I had shown while doing this art piece.
