Process of carving : Cut out the moon
My Self-Portrait
Firstly, use 2B pencil and sketch out face shadow and lines, shaded parts are shadows.(Black parts will stay and the white parts will be cut off)
Unfortunately I forgot to take photo, but basically use the light box to draw the original sketch laterally inverted on the other side of the paper
Use the reverse print in step 2, use the ballpoint pen and carbon paper to trace onto the lino print, following with outlining the sketch, color out the black shades.
Decide on the color scheme (mine is blue and yellow)
Then, use one color as the color of your skin and the other color to as the background. Reflections on face or hair should be left white, and also the small details like the eyes and the lips.
Printing will be in 3 stages, cut white, print yellow, cut yellow, then print blue, cut blue, then print black.
With reference to the colored portrait, cut out the parts that are white onto the lino print, start printing yellow
1st usable print ( A few random streaks of yellow but the facial features are clear which is the most important )
Check for any problems and if so cut again
2nd usable print (some black spots)
3rd usable print (Some white spots)
Cut the yellow and print blue according to the colored portrait
Same thing again, check if lino is cut deep enough with the prints. (Had to print the blue 3 times again as the paint was way too dry.) Then move on to the next step.
Proceed to cut the final lino print. Based on the color scheme, it is cut blue then print black. Cut the background out, and only leave the outline. Black will be printed over all of the previous prints.
Test print with just black ink and check for imperfections. Final black print before printing on the previous prints with blue and yellow
My one and only print which is my final print, that I am satisfied with. Had to reprint one addtional time to get a clear black print.
