take a look @ my leaf linocut + linoprint journey! โ๏ธโ๏ธโ๏ธ
*i was not present during the first lesson due to orientation so i do not have a sketch of my design. sorry! ๐
linocut (process)
linoprint (1st)
reflection!
after sketching out my design and drawing it onto the lino piece, i began to carve the outlined areas with a carving knife. this was my first time using the knife, therefore i was quite unfamiliar and scared. ๐จ however, i got used to it after awhile! ๐
reflection!
this is my first print! i was quite inexperienced with the linoprint station, so i did not really transfer some of the ink properly onto the paper. i was also unsatisfied with my work as there were areas which i did not carve deep enough. therefore i decided to touch up my linocut! ๐
linocut (final)
linoprint (2nd & final)
reflection!
i decided to add some random cuts in the background to make my linoprint more interesting! i was quite satisfied with my carving skills and i thought that the process was rather therapeutic and satisfying. ๐๐๐
reflection!
my 2nd and final linoprint was better. it was more detailed as i had carved the linoprint more clearly. i was quite satisfied, but i think an improvement that can be made would be to not carve too much at one spot as the top left of the linoprint is seemingly empty... i would take note of that in the future! ๐ซก
this is my self portrait lino making journey!!!! enjoy! ๐ซ๐ซ๐ซ
1 select the picture that i am going to use
i ensured that i took this picture in good lighting and was clear, so that it would be easier to identify the shadows and highlights
i also ensured that my face was big enough in the picture, so that the details on my face can be captured
then i adjusted the transparency and size for printing
2 add in shadows, highlights and shadings (process)
i identified places that were darker to be the shadows and places that were brighter to be the highlights
then i shaded these identified areas inย
i colored in my hair too!
i made sure that every detail was there and no shadows or highlights were missed out
3 completed shadows, highlights and shadings
after completing the shadings, shadows and highlights, i outlined the drawing on the other side of the paper for my color scheme planning
ย ย ( i forgot to take picture of the transferred drawing, sorry ๐ )
i thought that this was a rather interesting and fun process to identify shadows and how light depicts how we see things
4 decide on color scheme and write down printing instructions
i decided to choose pink for the white areas on my face and shirt, and blue for the background
i coloured in these parts with the respective colours, and shaded in my hair and shadows
then, i wrote down the instructions for the printing process of my linocut at the bottom
i felt that this process made me a lot clearer about what i wanted to achieve at the end of this linoprinting process
5 start cutting! (forgot take pic..)
this is the end product of my linocut (sorry i did not take pictures of the process of it being cut)
this stage is supposed to be cutting the white parts of the linocut, then printing my face pink
6 pink prints (1st print)
after cutting out the white parts of my linocut (lips, eye whites, ear etc.), i printed my face with pink ink
i made a total of 4 prints and was satisfied with the 4th one
this is the 1st print i made. i was extremely unsatisfied with it as it turned out messy and smudged. i realised that i did not wipe the excess ink off properly before printing
pink prints (2nd print)
this is my 2nd print i made. i managed to wipe off all the access ink, but i saw many white areas that were untouched by the ink.ย
i decided to roll more ink more consistently onto the linocut when printing the next print
pink prints (3rd print)
this is the 3rd print i made. i thought that the white untouched parts had decreased, but they were still very obvious.
i realised that the cause of this was that the consistency of the ink was abit too dry, so i added abit of water and made a 4th print, which i was sartisfied with -->
pink prints (4th n FINAL print)
this is the 4th and FINAL print i made. As there was not much time left, I improved the consistency of the ink and made a rather decent print.
there were still a little bit of white spots on my print, so my teacher allowed me to touch it up with a paintbrush.
i think that i can improve on the crispness of this print, as there are still some marks on the side showing that i did not completely wipe off the excess ink.
7 blue prints (test print 1)
after printing the pink linoprint, i cut out the white areas covered by my face and neck.ย
then, i printed it in blue which is my background colour, remembering to wipe off the ink that was on my facial features, as i was supposed to get a print without facial details
i think this test print was bad. there were many white areas which meant that i did not roll the ink on properly
blue prints (test print 2)
i used a different shade of blue this time! it had a better consistency, and there were lesser white patches on the print
blue prints (failed)
i forgot to wipe off my facial features when printing this one, but this print let me realise that i did not carve deep enough at the neck area, as there were some scratchy blue stains around that area
also, i forgot to take picture of the blue print above the pink print, so sorry
8 printing blue print onto pink print
im so sorry i forgot to take pictures of this process.. ๐
9 cut out the background and print in black
i did not take picture of this process either, sorry..
10 FINAL PRODUCT!!! i have a range of final prints below
black printย (1st print)
this print was extremely disappointing to me. it was patchy, the ink was not rolled over the lino well enough, so it turned out horrendous
black printย (2nd print)
this was also a failed print. the black ink transferred better, but the parts with the blue background were not covered
black printย (3rd print)
this was a bad print, but i only had one more print left to print the black ink on. i did not feel satisfied at all with this print. there was so much black dots transferred to the pink areas, which was not supposed to happen. i think i had pressed the lino too hard onto the paper when transferring the ink.
FINAL PRINT DECIDED TO SUBMIT
personally, i am not satisfied with this final print but it was the only one i was left with. i think there is so much to be improved on. firstly, the background should be a solid color and not so patchy (i had to print over quite a few times and it still turned out this bad) secondly, there were black marks transferred on to places that should not have black marks. this can be avoided if i carved deeper into the lino and used the perfect amount of force during the transferring process. this was a very valuable and insightful experience for me. i have learnt not to give up and persevere till i get the best work i can produce! i also learnt a new skill ---ย linocutting and linoprinting!
THANK YOU!
