My journey of linoprinting myself!
step 1: choosing a photo
this is me, the photo i chose to use for this project (i really don't like it, what was i thinking when i chose this photo π£)
and this is me after tracing out-myself and inverting it. i feel like out of all the parts of this project, this was the most mentally exhausting due to me having to trace out every last bit of the photo, even the details, such as the shadows. i had a very hard time getting the shadows right, but with guidance of ms ng, i could finally get the placements of shadow and highlights πΒ
i am truly very sorry but i lost all my photos for a period of time and lost my colour scheme photo. however, this was the colour scheme of my print. initially, i chose yellow for the skin but i changed it so i wouldn't look like i have jaundice π΅ i also chose purple because i feel like purple complements beige very well, as it still has orangey yellowish undertones. π½
My first print: I can't get the crop right even though i tried for very long, very sorry about that. My first print was very tragic. We had to layer it, and the first layer was the skin colour. I feel like i look a bit like elmo from the print, as i struggled and failed to completely coat my lino in paint, as you can see from the severe lack of colouration π’
My second print: complete opposite from the first one-- i added too much paint because i was paranoid that it would end up looking like how the first one did, which was pretty unfortunate as i had overdone it, causing the print too have too much paint on it.Β
my third print: layering the purple wasn't as complicated as i thought, but as you can see from the blotches white and beige i had failed to fully coat the print in paint, which was a crucial error that i had made, leading up to the blotchy stains on my print. π¬
my fourth print: testing the black layer! before i layered black onto my print, i tested it first. i think i added too much paint on this tester. oops π«
my fifth print: layering the black onto one of my previous prints with purple and beige layered onto it.Β
i added wayyy too little paint for this one, as you can very clealy see the blotchy paint, showing how i ad failed to fully coat it in black before applying it to my print. i think this was also a very crucial error i made throughout this entire process. π
my final result: this is my final result, with the layering and all. it may not be the best looking print, but i tried my best to layer everything properly for this piece of work. i think i did a pretty good job, with the shadows and highlights being quite prominent on my work! this is my final submission, reflection at the bottom (scroll down pls)
MY FINAL VERDICT π
Hi ms ng, if you are reading this i apologise for the extremely late submission due to technical issues! i am going to be honest, the linoprint was not the most smooth flowing project ever, and i lost a lot of hair because of this. but nonetheless, i still found a glimmer of enjoyment whilst doing this.
i wasn't very satisfied with my final print, but i feel like the time and effort put into the print to achieve a certain level of decency was worth it. i quite liked the lino cutting part (despite me cutting my finger multiple times π°) but one thing i learnt from this is how to be patient, to be able to cut the print slowly and accurately, to tracing out the details and waiting for the print to fully dry. never in my entire life had i felt so dedicated to something.
thank you ms ng, for your guidance throughout this project and sorry for the late submission (and making you reprint my image twice because i spilt milo on the first π )
