Practice
This is a drawing of the few musical instruments I play and since I enjoy playing them so I chose to draw them.
I removed the harmonica and replaced it with musical symbols because I thought that it looked nicer because the harmonica was mostly straight lines and therefore a bit plain.
It was slightly challenging to cut the guitar strings because I was worried I might accidentally cut through them as they are very thin.
I think I did not cut deep enough so some lines which were not supposed to be included were printed out.
I think this print is better than the first one because there are no random lines but it could be better if my lines are more defined and even.
Self portrait
Trace an outline and colour in the places which are shadows (in pencil).
I think that it was difficult to decide where the shadows should be, but I realised that following the shadows already in the picture was very helpful.
Trace over the pencil outlines with a permanent marker and turn the paper over so it is reversed when it is transferred to the lino. Therefore, when you print, it will be in the original direction.
Use a piece of carbon paper to trace your outlines onto the lino.
I think that it was difficult to see the markings made by the carbon paper on the lino, as they were very faint, so I think I should have used more force.
Choose two colours other than black for the skin and background. Write down which colours to cut and print at each step.
I think this step made it easier for me to see where to cut when I was actually cutting the lino.
Cut the white areas to print your first colour. (usually skin colour)
Print the first colour.
I think that it was challenging to get a good print, as sometimes the ink would go into the gaps or there would be not enough ink.
Example of what it would look like with insufficient ink
Cut the areas of the first colour to print your second colour. (usually background colour)
Print the second colour on a piece of blank paper.
I think that it was challenging to get a good print, as there would sometimes be markings at the spots supposed to be empty and sometimes the colour was not solid.
Print the second colour on the first colour.
I think that it was challenging to get a successful print, as sometimes the blue ink would go onto the peach parts, or the blue would be too light.
Example of how it is like when the blue ink is too light
Cut the areas of the second colour to print black.
It was sometimes difficult to not cut into the thin outlines of the figure, so I think I should draw the lines thicker.
Print black on a piece of blank paper.
I realised that using a broader roller for the black parts is better, because it would reduce the chances of the paint going into the gaps, as the area of the black parts is relatively small and there are many gaps between.
Print the black on the first and second colours.
I am quite happy with the result, as the colours mostly overlapped nicely and there were not many unnecessary small markings. I think I can improve by making sure that there are totally no lines or markings, so the art piece would look neater.
In conclusion, I think that this was a really interesting experience as I had never gotten the chance to try it before. I learnt that it is important to be patient, focused and consistent in my work so I am able to finish it on time and well.
