In the midst of group stages, by day four, the world has seen crazy kicks, top team battles, and many outcomes that have shocked viewers. The four teams to kick off their campaign on day four were Switzerland against Cameroon, and Uruguay against South Korea.

In Switzerland’s case, they have yet to win a World cup, but have only been knocked out in four group stages out of their nine appearances. Cameroon, however, has only advanced past group stages once in their seven World Cup appearances, the single time being knocked out in the last eight, or the quarter finals. Despite the efforts from both teams, Switzerland held on to their 1-0 lead given to them just after half time by Breel Embolo. With Cameroon being Embolo’s native country, Embolo had no intentions of celebrating his goal.

Next on the list was Uruguay versus South Korea. In Uruguay’s history, they were fortunate enough to have hosted the first ever World Cup, and in their 13 appearances, they have been crowned champions of the World. The first came in their host year in 1930, and the second two decades later, in 1950. South Korea has appeared in 11 World Cups, and in eight of those have failed to advance from the group stage. With 57% of possession going Uruguay’s way, as well as outpassing South Korea by 130 passes, the game finished 0-0.

For Portugal, having the likes of top players, as well as having five-time Ballon D’or winner Cristiano Ronaldo on their team, it could seem very easy to play well and advance. However, in their eight appearances, they have only come as close to the title as third place. Despite only four appearances, Ghana has only gone home in the group stages once. In the others, they have advanced to round of 16 and quarter finals. In the matchup in this World Cup, the opening goal was provided through a penalty from Cristiano Ronaldo in the 65th minute. After this goal, Cameroon had a response eight minutes later to level the play, with a goal from Andrew Ayew. Between all five goals scored in this game, each came less than ten minutes after the other. In the 78th minute, João Felix gave Portugal back their lead. Two minutes later, Rafael Leão put the Portuguese side two up. Nine minutes later, Despite the result being a loss, Osman Bukari put Ghana one behind Portugal, with the game finishing 3-2 to Portugal.

Last on day four was Brazil and Serbia. Brazil is one of the favorites in almost every World Cup, always possessing skill that almost seems to be something of the supernatural. The five time champions have only exited the group stages three times, and have participated every year in the history of the World Cup. Serbia have participated 13 times, and have sought out group stages six times, advancing to quarterfinals and beyond. However, they have only come as close as third place to the title. Serbia was able to hold the European football giants level until the 62nd minute, when Richarlison opened his World Cup bank account by cashing in a goal for Brazil. 11 minutes later, he scored again, this time with a bicycle kick, one of the most uncommon yet praised ways to score a goal when completed rather than just attempted. Richarlison grabbed a brace, as well as secured a 2-0 win for Brazil to start their World Cup journey.

There has been chaos for every day of the group stages thus far, and even with all the excitement on day four, there is still much more to come.
