Esports is an extracurricular activity for gamers to have team meetings, practices, and bond with other people for their love of video games. This is a great way to meet new people and show similar interests that also gives more diversity for activities in school.

Esports in Liverpool started right before the pandemic hit in 2018-2019 and had a really slow start. Business teacher Dan Young, initially wanted to make a club for gaming but didn’t get the approval he needed from the district because funding would be expensive. Dan Young then started to get support from the school after winning a contest for equipment which got the ball rolling and the school saw the legitimacy of his ideas. The school then saw potential in aiding scholarships to students involved, which led to some aiding for supplies to finally start the club, this included gaming PCs, keyboards, etc.

The equipment that they have just recently got is a huge upgrade for the team. Half of the PC’s were won in a giveaway by Mr. Young and the other half were provided with a tech budget from the school. The team also recently won a tournament and used their expenses for more team equipment.

The Esports club can give lots of opportunities. Two of the most important ones would be social skills and team bonding. Kids get together who may not be as social as other people with members of the club, and talk about similar interests in games. This is like any other sport because they work as a team with strong communication skills, and participate in weekly or sometimes daily practice.

The games that Liverpool focuses on are the more trending games that most of us play every day. The Liverpool team has been most recently playing Valorant, Rocket league, and League of Legends. A few more choices of games include Madden and Fortnite.

Back in November, the Liverpool team won a Rocket League tournament for $1000. Down below is the link to another article on LHS Lifeguard regarding that tournament. If you have any interest in joining the team, talk to Mr. Young in room 928. Meetings take place Mondays and Tuesdays after school in the library.
