When thinking of what time period to live through in history I thought it would be an easy answer. I always thought it would be cool to live through the Roman Empire, but looking back at that answer I feel like that isn’t my true answer due to the fact of the many barbarian attacks. I find it simply difficult to try to choose an era of history to live through due to the actuality that there are benefits and detriments to each. When thinking about it more, the span between the 1960’s to 1980’s within the golden age of music would be the time span I would have loved to live through. My love of 1960’s-1980’s music started through my father and listening to it with him. Here is where I feel like you saw music blossom the most and take unexpected twists and turns within the music industry.
You first see it in the 1960’s with the birth of rock and roll that happened with Elvis Presley and Jimi Hendrix. Parents would get mad at their children if they were listening to this music calling it the “devil's music” and they’re kids using it as an act of rebellion at the time, but not knowing later on how big rock music will hit everyone in the country. You also had what was known to be as the “British Invasion” which brought over many popular artists such as: The Kinks, but the most popular obviously being: The Beatles. The Beatles was one of those bands that struck big and everyone knows them to this day with songs like: “Let it Be”, “Hey Jude”, and “Yesterday”. You also had the rise of anti-war music to combat the Cold War, but more specifically the Vietnam War; the one that stands out to me the most is: “Gimme Shelter” by: The Rolling Stones. It stands out the most due to the vivid lyrics about rape, and murder being just a shot away as a form of rebellion against the war in Vietnam.
Then in the 1970’s you had the birth of disco and funk that came into play. When you think disco you automatically think the Bee Gees, and Earth Wind & Fire with songs like “Stayin Alive” and “Boogie Wonderland”. Although, the birth of disco in mainstream media didn’t come until after: Saturday Night Fever (1977) with the rise of the Bee Gees becoming an overnight sensation. This era was all about dancing at clubs with a mirrorball and having a good time on the weekend.
Then when you get to the 1980’s which was another decade that grew what we know as: rock, pop, and electronic songs with major artists such as: Micheal Jackson. When you think of the 80’s you think of the movies, songs, malls, and the bright neon clothing. I think this decade out of them all influenced me the most, due to the fact that my parents lived through it during high school. It was practically forced down my throat with my dad listening to the music from the 80’s and being told all about how going to the mall was a big event to go roller skating with friends versus now. How he said if he could relive the 80’s he would in a heartbeat and through watching shows like: Stranger Things (set during the 1980’s). I understand why now because when I saw Elle (the main character) walk away at the mall to “Cold as Ice” by: Foreigner it was just simply an iconic era that is untouchable and we will never have anything like that again.
When you ask what era I wanna live through, my simple answer is this golden age (1960’s-1980’s) of music that changed the course of history forever. When artists went into sound studios and recorded their hearts out and would never be home from the studio. It feels like my generation never had anything like that due to the use of the internet and songs being a cash grab. I want those live events and people being jammed packed to see a performer who can actually sing. So, yes I would travel back to the 1960’s-1980’s.
