Barbados breaks from the Queen to become the world's newest republic

A New Republic rises to the world stage after the former Commonwealth of Barbados agreed to cut all ties with the English Monarchy on Tuesday, November 30th 2021, exactly fifty five years after the island first gained its independence 55 years ago.

In 1966 when the government first gained its independence from the declining British Empire in the age of decolonization, similar to most commonwealth nations, the country kept the Queen of England as their official head of state, with a prime minister in control of national affairs. This however, changed when the Parliament of Barbados voted in favor of cutting all ties to the monarchy, and establishing a new democratic republic.

Attending this event were two celebrities: Prince Charles, representing the leaving English monarchy; and Rihanna, a native born Barbadian. As the ceremonies commenced, Prince Charles gave a short speech promoting Barbadian independence and condemning the actions of his ancestors. Sandra Mason gave a speech announcing the new republic to the world as she became its first ever president. Rihanna was invited to the ceremonies to receive the honor of “national hero” from Prime Minister Mia Mottley, who commented that her music and influence has been an inspiration to the nation.

While it will likely be a footnote in world history, for local Bajans, It's the beginning of a new era of independence, identity, and prosperity.
