Despite only being the second full day of matches in the World Cup, there has already been great excitement from every game played so far. For the second full day, the teams we saw play their opening matches were teams from groups C and D. The earliest game of the day that was played was Saudi Arabia and Argentina.

Saudia Arabia players celebrate the goal that was responsible for putting them ahead.

This game was crucial, like many in the group stages will be, for both teams. However, when you have the likes of players among the names of greats on your international team, the game seems like it matters that much more. For Argentina, Lionel Messi was that player. Going into this game, Argentina have made an appearance 16 of the 21 times the World Cup has been played, and have only been eliminated in the group stages five of those 16 times. Sure, fans from all backgrounds were up to see Messi and his team walk away with an “a lot to a little” win, that wasn’t the case. Saudi Arabia, who were named underdogs in this year's tournament, knew the task ahead of them, and were willing to take it head on. Saudi Arabia have only participated in five World Cups, and have only made it past the group stage one time in their five appearances.

With a penalty from Messi in the 10th minute, Argentina seemed to be ready to play even harder with a fire now under their feet. However, in the 48th minute, Saleh Alsherhi put Saudi Arabia level. With possession being 70% with Argentina, most would think that they would’ve surely found the back of the net again, but it was Saudi Arabia who put another goal on the board in the 53rd minute. Saudi Arabia, courtesy of Salem Aldawsari’s goal, was able to hold their lead until the full time whistle was blown. After the big win over a football powerhouse, Saudi Arabia has declared their win over Argentina a National Holiday. With the win, Saudi Arabia is top of their group, and Argentina is at the bottom.

With an exciting run in the UEFA Euro 2020, Denmark has been another favorite so far in this tournament. They faced off with Tunisia yesterday, who have only made five World Cup appearances in their history. With many goals from Tunisia that couldn’t be counted because of the offsides rules, as well as a foul not strong enough for  a penalty for Denmark, Tunisia was fortunate enough to walk away with one point from the 0-0 match yesterday. Denmark are currently third in their group, and Tunisia are second.

The midday match on Tuesday was Mexico and Poland. While Mexico has a strong team, the Polish side has the likes of Robert Lewandowski, who is a big name in the modern football world, named as a top striker in club and international football. In this game, everything was all square for really the entirety of the game. However, Mexico gave up a penalty in the second half, and surely the man to step up to the plate for Poland would have to be Robert Lewandowski. With so much pressure behind penalties, a miss means just as much as a make. Despite the effort from Lewandowski, Memo Ochoa in Mexico's goal came up with the save, leaving the game to finish out 0-0. After ending their opener all square, Poland sit in second, and Mexico, third.

Ousmane Dembele of France hugs his teammate, Olivier Giroud, in celebration of his two goals to contribute to their 4-1 win.

The final game to cap off the second full day, was between reigning world champions, France, and Australia. France came into squad selection, as well as training camp with many injury setbacks. Players like Presnel Kimpembe, N’Golo Kante, and Paul Pogba, who were all in the winning 2018 squad, were forced to miss this World Cup through injury. Less than a week into camp, France was also left with news of one of their top midfielders, Christopher Nkunku, was to miss out, as well as one of the best footballers in modern day football, and Ballon D’or winner, Karim Benzema. With such a long injury list, one would think France couldn’t possibly stand a chance, and it didn’t seem like it when France gave up a goal in the 9th minute from Craig Goodwin of Australia. However, France was ready to turn it around immediately after, and were level with Australia by the 27th minute with a goal from France’s Adrien Rabiot. Less than 10 minutes after getting even, Olivier Giroud put France ahead, leaving the score 2-1 at half time. With France holding 63% of possession, it was inevitable that they were to put not one, but two more goals in the net in the second half. The third goal was scored by Kylian Mbappe, and just three minutes after, Olivier Giroud capped off France’s goal tally for the day, and also grabbed himself a brace. By the full time whistle, the score was 4-1. France now sit at top of their group, and Australia, last.

With so many riveting games today, surely there is more action packed into the rest of this group stage, and we are only on day two. For day three, we will see teams from groups E and F open their World Cup Campaign, with even more big names in football looking to start off their World Cup run with a bang.
