LHS Gourmet Cooking Class hosts Annual Cake Decorating Contest
By: Ashlyn Brown | 6/1/22
This year was the third year of Cathleen Bateman’s Gourmet Cooking Class cake decorating competition. The competition has previously taken place during Fall 2019, Fall 2020, Spring 2021, Fall 2021, and Spring 2022. The competition is a Project-Based Learning lesson in which students use the components they’ve learned in class. The students were responsible for various things such as planning the schedule and coming up with recipes; essentially they made the plan and set the goal. With the help of Bateman, the students learn how to bake the cake, make a filling and icing, stack the cake, ice the cake, and use piping tools to add decorations.
This year, there were nine groups who participated in the competition. According to Batemen, the entire process took about two weeks. Once the cakes were completed, pictures of the cakes were taken and sent to over 100 staff members who voted on the winner of each class and the overall winner.
This semester, the winner of period 6 was "Cows and Creme" created by Katelyn Alpuerto, Savannah Cesario, Allayna Johnson, Taylor McCoy, and Arbay Muya; and the winner of period 7 was "Spongebob" by Mason Blandford, Luke DeGiloromo, Brady Ruediger, Ethan Warner, Chris Yates. Congratulations and good job to all of the competitors!
