What Does The Counseling Center Do?

At LHS, there are 11 certified school counselors in the building. The counselors are one of the most essential resources to students during their 4 years at LHS! Every year they meet with students to plan their academic programs. Students are given the opportunity to choose courses for next year, and talk about options for after graduation. Once students get to be juniors and seniors, counselors start to focus a lot more on these plans and help students identify where they want to go and what they want to do. They help with college applications, applications for trade schools, financial aid, and more!

In addition to the post-high school planning piece, counselors also help students academically. They can help connect students with resources in the building if they are struggling in classes and need some extra help. They can also help facilitate conversations between students with teachers if students want to ask for help, but are unsure how to approach it.

The third main thing that the counselors focus on with our students is social and emotional wellbeing. Counselors can meet with students who are having a bad day, or who are struggling with something and need help finding a solution. While they provide crisis and solution based counseling, they can also make referrals for students to see our school social workers or outside therapists if they would like to see someone more regularly.

“We are a one-stop shop for students,” says Amanda Iannicello, a counselor down in the counseling center. If there is anything you ever need or if you ever have a question but don't know who to ask, come see your counselor! “If we can't help, we will make sure to get you to someone who can.”
