Star cornerback Trevon Diggs is officially out for the rest of the season with a torn ACL in his left knee. Diggs suffered the injury while participating in a one-on-one period during the Cowboys’ practice on September 21st. Diggs had also been spotted inside the team facility walking with crutches before undergoing an MRI, which revealed the very unfortunate ACL tear.

Losing Diggs is a massive loss for the Cowboys’ top ranked defense to start out the year. Dallas’ defense has started out ranking number one in the NFL in points per game allowed and yards allowed.

Since entering the NFL in 2020 as a second round pick by the Cowboys, Diggs has had 18 interceptions--tied with cornerback J.C. Jackson of the Los Angeles Chargers for most in the NFL in that span.

According to NFL Next Gen Stats data, so far this season for the Cowboys (2 games), Diggs has been targeted eight times as the nearest defender in coverage, only allowing three catches for 31 yards. Quarterbacks also have a passer rating of 9.9 on throws with Diggs as the nearest/primary defender. Diggs has also intercepted a pass, recorded three pass break ups, and had two tackles.

During training camp, Diggs signed a contract extension with the Cowboys for five years worth a total of $97 million, which included a $21.25 million signing bonus and $42.3 million of his contract being guaranteed. Diggs has dealt with injuries in the past, missing four games in his rookie campaign with a foot injury. He also missed one game in each of the past two seasons.
